I need some help/feedback from people that already own HD DVD Players. I am in the market for a HD/Upconverting DVD player and so far am leaning towards the Toshiba SD4980. It seems to have the best reviews on Futureshops Site.
Any ideas or recommendations? I like the idea that you can switch between modes 480/720/1080i while a movie is playing. I would also like somthing that can play a varitity of discs. |

To clarify, I think James is meaning that no one owns HD DVD players yet (Blu-ray and HD DVD's are still being developed). Don't confuse upcoversion with "HD" dvd players.

Thread title changed, as there are no HD DVD players yet, but the OP may know this.

DO NOT BUY THE TOSHIBA!!! The video quality on the tosh is just horrible, depending on what other types of media you want to play I would suggest you look at the panasonic d77s or the lg 531. The Lg is quite a nice player for a good price. The panasonic has a slight edge in video quality but it does not play nearly the range of media that the lg does.

It is a great player, top rated. Cost me $1400 $CDN. Pricey, yeah. But then I wanted the audio-portions top end. Lots of reviews on the Net for it. MM |

I have the Panasonic S97 and absolutely love it. It has been perfect since I took it out of the box. I think the model available now is the similar S77.

If your PC is anyhwere near your tv, try using your PC as your dvd player. I was also considering getting one of these upconverting players until I discovered the power of the PC dvd player. I have it hooked up via VGA cables and set my video card output to 1280x720. Picture quality is awesome.

i have the oppo 971 with the latest firmware update version 2.2 i think, great player better than the lg 531 or the samsung 850 that it replaced
what surprised me the most was how much better it sounded lip sync issue seems to have been resolved with the layest firmware as well |

I have two of these upconverting players - an LG 7832 which is one of the first upconverting players to hit the market, and a Samsung 850.
I still prefer LG although it's about 3 years older than the Samsungv 850 (my estimate could be wrong), but to my eyes, the LG beats the Samsung notwithstanding the fact that LG is component video connected while the Samsung is HDMI. Both are great players, though. This LG model is no longer available but there are some new ones with newer upconverting technology one would hope. Good luck in your search. I heard a lot of good things about the Oppo, LG 531 and the Pannys, so you have a lot to choose from. |

Will the Oppo upconvert through component? If not is my only choice the LG for upconversion through component?

nicker22....Just a tip, do not put your faith in the FutureShop web site reviews, unreliable and biased. I sent in an honest reiview once on vcr's and they never posted it. They just want to sell products. Having said that I have purchased a lot from them but I am an informed consumer. Myself I would get the Panasonic S77 as well. I have a Pany S47,it does DVD Audio ,and will play anything I need. 480P is great.
