I had lost those 2 channels but it was not the fault of my CM4228 but my CM7775 preamp filtering out the VHF signals, once I replaced that with a Winegard AP-8800 preamp I started getting CTV and CHCH again.

LOBO in Woodbridge
Great with dual stacked 4228's. CTV 1 and 2 are almost as strong as CBC..eg. CBC 99% the CTV's 95-97% strength. I am not aimed properly at CHCH but still get it most of the time. |

I went to the sponsors site (Save and Replay)
Here is what they suggest: Db8 is $99.99 CM7777 $94.99 Rotor when in stock is $109.99 Plus mounting and grounding & coax Here is my original post: I live here: http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=brown+s...h&z=16&vpsrc=0 I don't want to go out and drop a bunch of money - so I was wondering what you all thought about reception, will I need a rotor? Here are my TV Fool results: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...60b5738e4617a5 I can mount it on my roof which will be approx. 30' off the ground with no real trees in the way? Thanks for all the help in advance! Thoughts? Is this a good setup? I want to mount on a gable end with a J pole. Thanks ~Jeff |

Skydiveguy,
If you read through Chinadog's experience in this thread (he's in Bradford), you'll see that way back when he followed S&R's advice, I respectfully disagreed with S&R's recommendation -- and I was proven right. Chinadog has since obtained a second VHF antenna to add to his DB8. I think S&R is wrong to to be continuing to recommend the DB8-only solution to people in distances similar or farther than Newmarket. I think the rotator is a good idea but it does add a lot of complexity to your setup (running the wires for it, etc.) but it will help with fine-tuning stations - and it may make the difference between getting and not-getting occasional US reception if/when there is any available to you. Maybe start out without the rotator for now and add one later if your really get into OTA. However, if you are paying someone for the installation and only want to pay once, then bite the bullet and get the rotator. The good news is that you'll rarely need to use the rotator, but when you need it, it will be there for you to make little tweaks. Good luck. I recommend Rotator (your call) pre-amp cm7777 antennas: Option 1) DB8 + Winegard 1713 or Antennacraft y10-7-13 Option 2) Winegard hd7698p (or 97p) or Antennacraft HBU55

I agree with HWP.
But I would also note that starting next week The Source will be stocking the CM4228HD and the CM7777 preamp, so as long as your local store manager is ok with you returning the gear and won't charge you a restocking fee, it may be worth a test-run first. They also have the CM2016, CM2018, CM3679, all of which are designed for VHF, so you could use the CM7777 on separate VHF/UHF mode (perhaps the 2016 + 4228 combined) and may get a desirable result.

alebowgm,
That's good to know about The Source. Double check that they'll let you return things though. I own a Channel Master 2016. The VHF portion of one of those is basically an outdoor pair of rabbit ears. I have read somewhere that the gain on the 2016 for vhf-high is somewhere ranging from -1 to 1. So you need to have some decent signal to start with to hope to get away with using one of those. Anyway, thanks for mentioning another option.

Agreed, but considering where the OP is, he is pretty close to the CKVR signal, so a 2016 may be all that is needed. All he would probably lose is CHCH, CKCO and WBBZ (Which is probably to far away).

He'd also have to ensure that he gets CFTO rf9 one edge from Toronto +25dB. CFTO is starting to get weaker where he is and we don't know how accurate the TV Fool is for those VHF channels.
He could afford to lose CHCH on 11 from Hamilton because CHCH digital is on UHF 23 in Barrie. Agreed, no hope of WBBZ on rf7. And then there's CKVR Barrie coming in strong for him off the back of any antenna. My gut tells me he needs to do this right or he risks having unstable reception of CFTO Toronto. He lives at Queen & Brown in Tottenham, ON -- west of Newmarket.

Thanks - Looks halfway between Newmarket and Orangeville....I think far enough from me to make a comparison with what I am using/getting. I agree that he is still close enough to Barrie to get CKVR off the back side.
