I've had a lot of complaints about this ad so I will comment once.
The Viiv ad is a special type of expanding ad that does not create a new page the way a pop up does. This type of ad is new to me as well as our readers. Interestingly it can't expand in Opera or Firefox, only in Internet Explorer. My feeling is that ad should be limited to one time per session as its very intrusive expanding on every page, therefore I spoke to Intel about it and told them that this ad has generated more venom than any ad ever run on Digital Home. My recommendation was to stop running it because I felt it did more harm than good. They said they would investigate but would likely just wait for feedback. Interestingly no one from this site ever contacted Intel to complain! The ViiV ad has been booked until January 13th, 2006 so it will continue until that time although it will probably run its course well before the 13th. In 2006, I have decided that this type of ad will be eliminated and/or restricted such that it will only expand once per session and not on a rollover. I am not prepared to say that this type of ad will never run a again since the alternative is transitionals which many sites employ and I think transitional ads are the ultimate annoyance. Finally, in 2006, I will be making renewed efforts to deal with ad blockers and be making efforts to find a balance between ads that are conscientious of readers but no invisible. For those who say there should be no Flash ads etc., I can only say that you need to find a new site because there will always be advertising on the site. In reviewing many sites, I think DHC is generally far less intrusive than many other "commercial" sites where commercial is defined as a site that is designed to make money.

Hugh, are you able to insist that advertisers have clear and accessible ways for members to contact them? |
