No. Rogers will not authorize a box not in their database of rental or retail boxes. The comcast box is not going to be in that database.

I wish they'd tell the agents this.. i had a sales agent tell me this week that i can buy any digital terminal (doesn't even have to be one that Rogers uses!!).. and all I have to do is call them and they'll add it to their database so that I can use it with my cable.. (this answer spawned off when I asked if there were plans for anything beyond the SA8300HD soon, which he went on to say I'm not limited to the ones Rogers sells / rents).. I asked about ones in other countries, and specifically asked what happens if the serial number isn't in the Rogers database - his answer was just call us up and they'll add it.

Well technically they could do that but it is extremly unlikely that they will... did you take down the ID of the CSR... would seem like a good way to talk them into giving you some sort of free box/rental...

You may have been talking to a(n Atlantic Canada) CSR who was thinking about a Motorola STB, which doesn't have the same limitations as SA.

I have a problem. I think this new box I bought online was stolen off the back of a truck or something, becausae they charged me the full 500$ on my bill. How funny, I asked them if everything was ok when I was activating after I was put on hold by the lady for a while. "Yes sir, everything is excellent!"
I'm too afraid to call them to find out the truth. Could this of had just been a mistake on their end? I don't feel like paying a 900$ to get a freakin cable box. |

Um:
- what's the make/model of the new box? - Who's your service provider? - Where are you located? - Who is "they" (charged me $500)? - Who is "their end" (mistake)? - A STB costs $170 and a PVR is $300 for Rogers Ontario, not $900. See the deals section of this forum

8300HD
Rogers Ottawa Rogers Charged me 500$ (They're only 300 on christmas sales and stuff) When I say 900, I mean the cashola I spent on the box, and then the 500+tax from Rogers |

What does this have to do with outside STBs, which this thread is about? You seem to have purchased a STB from Rogers and I assume it has a Rogers logo and Rogers will activate it and provide assistance when necessary.
I have no idea what the following statement means and it's probably irrelevant for this thread: Quote:

Sorry, let me clarify. Its a rogers branded box that I bought new online from some guy on kijiji. It works, but Rogers charged me for it on my bill, even though I already payed that guy for it.
So basically I payed twice. I think Rogers charged me 500$ on my bill because that guy got it from somewhere he shouldn't of had. I'm a little afraid to call and find that out. You're right, it's not really an outside box, but I thought this topic was pretty close. |

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like the guy you purchased it from stole it from Rogers and you ended up with stolen goods. Caveat Emptor.
Here's the thread on buying/selling. http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=64632

Does this happen often? Is this how Rogers deals with this?

This is the first time I've heard of this particular situation, however, the real owner of stolen goods probably has two options - ask for payment from the person in possession of the goods, if that person wishes to keep the goods, or ask for the stolen goods to be returned. This is pretty normal practice for any Owner.
From a legal standpoint, the person in possession of the stolen goods could be charged with possession of stolen goods since you should have done your homework - perhaps you can consider yourself lucky that you were not charged? (not usually done in these minor circumstances, especially if an easy agreement can be reached without getting the law involved.) It's the same as purchasing anything used - for example a vehicle. You must run a trace on the VIN, or you could find yourself without money and a vehicle.

Which as a rule of thumb when purchasing an STB from a 3rd party, you ALWAYS need to get the SAB# in advance or at the time of sale and call Rogers (or any provider for that matter) to verify the status of the terminal.
