If so, is there a free trial period and for how long ?

Its in the same spot (channel number wise) as the older discovery Hd channel - so the new content just replaces the old.

Not sure about a freeview period - but it was mentioned in one of the threads it will likely be until June/July 2006 as a generic statement.

Yes, at channel 505. Dunno if ithere is any free preview but I would doubt it, as this channel is not really a "new" channel.

What is new is the fact that it is HD 24/24 in 16/9 ratio.....Videotron does have discovery but it is not HD....it is SD

No free preview for Rogers HD subscribers unless you already paid for it. I turned to the channel and got the "you must subscibe" screen.

The people who had the "old" Discovery HD channel (505) have the new 24/7 Discovery HD channel on Rogers. People who didn't, don't.

I wonder whether the "free preview" means that the HD pac price may change after the "free preview" ends, or whether Discovery HD may end up a-la-carte.?

I'm sure we'll all find out next year...

It better freakin not. They're now simply delivering on what the product is supposed to be - HD - not part time HD.

But, we all know how marketing heads like to spin things that nothing would surprise me. I'm so addicted to non-fiction HD that I'd pay double the price anyway, but the market wouldn't pay double so they'd only be able to increase marginally anyway, bwaaaaa haaaaa haaaaaa haaaaaa.

The old pseudo HD Discovery channel was Category 1. The new one is Category 2 - meaning that distributors can package it how they want to.

All I know is that it is so great to have a 24/7 HD channel.

Every time I turn to it to fill in 20 minutes or so...(before a hockey game)...I end up missing the beginning of the game

I can not believe that some people wait around for a free preview of this channel in front of their expensive HDTVs and HD receivers and refuse to pay 2.50 a month for Discovery HD. This is IT people. It's here and now :-)

If we bend over for $2.50 a channel, that's like agreeing to $500/month TV bill. The previous channel wasn't too bad and it was free with your subscription to the low-def version.

Realistically channels should be priced around 0.25 - 0.50 each.

what provider are you with Neild ? I'm with BEV and had the new Discovery HD available from day 1 at no extra charge. I'm a subscriber to the News & Learning package that includes the SD version of the Discovery channel ... and with that the new Discovery HD comes for free.

2.50 a month charge is for subscribers who do not want to pay $5 for the whole News & Learning package.

For the sake of discussion, how many channels are in your News & Learning pack, and how many of you do truly want and truly watch?

Most of the bundles here (Access) are set up to contain one, maybe 2 channels that the typical person would want. They sprinkle the desirable channels throughout the packages.

So in the end, to get the 6 channels you want, you end up buying 6 packs.

True, they let pick the 6 individual channels, but they jack the price so that you're paying as much for the 6 you want as you are for the 36 pack (with 6 you want and 30 that are lukewarm)

Ideally consumers could just pick the channels they want and pay only for them, not subsidizing other weak channels in the pack.
