No problems here. I also have the 44HM85 and play my Xbox 360 on it quite regularly. The picture looks fantastic and there are certainly no brightness or contrast issues (although, I've never played Oblivion on it).

This may be a stupid question but, is the HD/SD switch on your Xbox 360 component cables (underneath the plug that connects to your Xbox) set to HD? It's an easy thing to overlook (I did at first) and, if it's in the wrong position, you'll only get 480p widescreen on the TV regardless of your Xbox 360 settings.

This TV seems to downscale everything coming in from the component inputs to 480p. I just got an upconverting DVD player from FS just to test, and the DVD player says it's sending 720p, but the TV says it's only getting 480p. Anyone know if it's actually posible to get 720p onto it through components or i have to use HDMI for that?

Barabashka that's impossible given that the native resolution of this TV is 720P. EVERYTHING displayed in it is upscaled/downscaled to 720P. Check your source and which kind of connection you're using.

Normally most of the upconverting 720p & 1080i dvd can only be done vai the dvi/hdmi connection.

I think there was one Samsung or LG dvd that was able to.

I have been reading that the Xbox 360 can upconvert DVD's to 720p using the VGA cables now with the latest dashboard update. I tried it out and set the xbox 360 to 1280x720 res and games looked okay but DVD's seemed unchanged as far as I could tell. I wasn't able to verify the DVD was using 720p (I didn't know how to) either. I just assumed it was due to the preset 1280x720 resolution. Has anyone else tried this yet? Some people claim large improvements in DVD playback but I didn't experience it.

Default Cbale

My tv does not seem to turn on with a picture in the cable mode. If I am set to C/S HD1 and then hit any channel number my basic cable pic comes on. Ant ideas??

okay, here's one for you guys, i have had this TV for a few months and i love it, HD from bell through HDMI looks amazing.

One thing though, i can't play my xbox 360 or watch DVD's through component because it is WAY to dark. I know it is, because was have a 46" RPTV downstairs and it looks amazing playing the 360.

I have the DLP configured right and the 360 is told to play at 720p, everything is right, but it's so dark.

Question 44HM85 Snapping and Cracking

Hi all.

I've had my Toshiba since March and what started as a minor annoyance has now turned into a nightly event. That is, as the TV warms up, the case must expand and contract leading to a series of cracks and snaps (noises).
Has anyone else had this? I called BB yesterday and they are sending someone out to check. My son went through the same thing with a different model and eventually had the TV replaced.

Also told BB about the remote problem of not turning on the set. Going to have to try a 'reboot'...

My problem is a little bit different though.
Lately I have started to notice that my screen (at nights or in the dark) is a lot brighter in one side than the other (right side is significantly darker). And I don't mean by a little corner, no, it's the entire half of the TV. The darker side is good, it makes blacks look almost black while in the brighter side, well, let's just say it's a BAD to say the least.
Has anyone experience this problem with there sets?
Thanks

I just got my set back from the repair shop. They tightened all the screws and added some foam insulation to the case to top the snapping/cracking sounds.

About the remote problem of not turning the set on, Toshiba told the repair shop that the problem comes from plugging the set in to a power/surge protector and the recommendation it to plug it directly to the wall.

I actually kind of noticed the darkness on the right side of my TV after reading your post. It's not that bad, and i think it might be due to the lighting in my basement but i'm not sure. i can't tell when there is picture being displayed, only when the screen is completely black.

Actually I just started noticing this about a week now. The right half of the screen is darker than the left half. I notice it on dark backgrounds and when the signal fades momentaily when transitioning from say a commercial back to the regular program.

I am new to the forums here, I myself have a 44hm85 as well which I am quite impressed with. I am wondering tho, how does one display what resolution is and how does one find the advanced settings I have seen a few people mention. I have looked through the manual, but did not find anything related.

Correct, a standard DVD contains the CSS protocol which limits resolution to 480p when Component connection is used. The only way to beat this is to rip the DVD and burn to a new DVD and the CSS coding will not be present.

Hi Guys, I'm glad I found this forum, because it means that I am not crazy.

I have an LG 44SZ8D (Rebadged Toshiba 44HM85 from what I've been reading). My friend has the EXACT same TV as me and my uncle has the actual Toshiba, so I have a few points of reference.

Lately, I've been noticing that the black levels on my TV are getting really bad, and also that on a pure black screen (like "No Signal), the black isn't even. About 1/2 of the screen is pretty much light grey, and the rest is black. I have played with all the contrast/brightness settings, even trying settings from the "expert" menu. I even bought the service manual in hopes that it may solve this.

Have you guys come to any sort of solutions? At first I thought it was the lighting in my room, but I watched the TV at night with NO LIGHTS, and the issue is even more visible then. I wrote the LG a while ago, and they told me to contact a service center, so I might go and do that.

My friends LG is exhibiting the same issues, but my uncles Toshiba (that I just saw last night) looked AWESOME. I know my LG looked like that at one point! It might have something to do with the bulb hours, but I would expect that the picture would get DARKER, not BRIGHTER (the only way I have managed to cope with this for now is to turn brightness down to 20).

Let me know what you guys did about this!
