This is great news and a start for those of us in Vancouver (still waiting for DD 5.1 and the all mighty HDTV). However, I am in downtown Vancouver and don't see these channels - 199 is still the Shaw customer information channel and the others do not show up on the IPG.

Further, I just called the technical support line, the guy didn't know what timeshifting was but did confirm there is nothing on those channels, except the customer information channel.

Bassbonist - Could you tell me if Shaw is passing through DD 5.1 signals yet and if not if this is going to happen soon? Again the tech support guy said that "the box has the Dolby Digital logo so you must be getting it" - brilliant

This is 100% speculation on my part but it seems that the channels you have listed as receiving are all US network HD channels (except for Fox but we won't get into that here). So it would seem to follow that Kelowna is set to join Calgary as part of the HD test phase - making this Vancouver cable subscriber more and more angry my the minute. If I miss the Superbowl in HD this year - there is gonna be trouble.

Oh man...tell me HD cable is just around the corner in Calgary! I'm hoping that both the Motorola 5100 and HD content will be offered here in Calgary before the end of the year. I was starting to give up hope (and look to BEV) before this little tidbit landed. Obviously not a guarantee...but promising...

These stations may also have HDTV channels but they are SD at present. I'm in Kelowna so I tuned in to them yesterday as soon as I saw Bassbonist's posting.

My first question when I viewed them, though, was why they were only US stations. I must admit I haven't followed the "time shifting" threads as I haven't seen much value in having time shifted channels except for getting a pure CBC channel as the Kelowna CBC affiliate doesn't carry all the CBC prime time programs. CBC Newsworld carries some of the missed programming but not all of it. I must admit I didn't even think that they might be related to HDTV.

I sure hope that you are right in your speculation that these are preliminary to getting HDTV here in Kelowna. I have been ready for it for over 2 years. Missing the good sound on the few movies on Movie Central that are carring in DD 5.1 is getting annoying enough.

It's because no channels are assigned to those numbers in your region. It's the same thing for me here in the Valley.

I am here in Kelowna and this rocks...but Alan said these channels are being broadcast in SD. I have seen SD on expressvu and these channels are definatly not being broadcast in SD.

Also, have any of you spoken to any Techs in town here and got any more info about HD??? I would love to be a beta tester here in K-Town

Wanted to let any Vancouver and area people know that I have just checked channels 195-198 -- they have been assigned to the Big 4 Detroit networks in the IPG but as of yet are not showing a picture, just a black screen with the "this channel should be available shortly message".

Hopefully these will be turned on soon!!!!!!!

Maybe I mis-spoke. I meant they are being broadcast as NTSC signals in the current cable digital format. The same as all other digital channels currently carried on Shaw here in Kelowna. I thought this can be referred to as Standard Definition TV.
