Here's why.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2002Oct22.html I've noticed this for the last couple of weeks actually with DNS servers timing out, etc but that could have been something else |

So, it wasn't just my connection that slowed down!

No, it was slow because you didn't buy your neighbourhood and cable internet is shared access!!
Sorry, I got caught up in DSL marketing for a minute there. |

this attack seems to have only been Monday 5 to 6 PM EDT.
It seems to me that a lot of companies and educational systems need to patch the problems that allow the attackers to launch the attacks. I see a class action suit coming out of all this as companies will start to sue those companies and institutions that don't properly protect their servers. |

I switched from ADSL to cable and find cable to be 2.5 times faster.
I ran benchmarks that proved it. Of course, ADSL now comes in many flavours. |

James: ADSL is typically slower for me too (I've got both available to me), but it's more consistent. Cable is typically faster, but can sometimes be a bit slow during congested times and depending on who else is on your "block".
"Testing" is a bit strange. I've run many tests over almost 4 years and the results vary quite a bit, depending on which "test site", which server, etc. Most times it's the internet site you go to that is the limitation, not your connection speed. Believe it or not, your computer's processor speed and RAM can also have an effect on some "graphics intensive" sites.

I have tested the performance several time, during different times of day with similiar results. I was basically using 2 different web sites to test. The first was the one provided to me by sympatico and the second was provided by Cogeco.
Perhaps the neighbours don't have cable access. Anyway, back to the original topic, i posted a link over at the internet forum dealing with the same issue. That thread is locked. I just assumed that putting an internet related thread in a internet forum made sense  |
