Thumbs up Dsr505 Hd

Was going to order a DSR500 for the rec room and was told about the new DSR505.

Anyone got one yet?

How is it working?

It's $299, but new subs get a $100 credits and existings subs get $50.
Not too bad for an HD receiver.

It's just a Voom DSR550 with the ATSC tuner module taken out of it.

If you don't need the DVI connection, you might as well get a DSR500 at a big box store for $199

I have 3 Voom boxes can I use them on Choice? Will Choice activate them?

Voom boxes are everywhere in the US and all over EBAY for low $. I asked * choice who said they would NOT authourize them on their network. CS rep said the firmware in incompatable.

This is only one *choice opinion. But speak to someone higher up!

The hardware is not identicle so I'd imagine the firmware that StarChoice is using will not fully support the VOOM models.

Arrow T'aint gonna happen!

I went 'Higher Up' and it isn't going to happen.
Why should they, they want to sell you a 505 instead.

There are too many differences between the 550 and the 505, that's it's not practical for individuals.

Now if you called and said I have 10,000 I'd like to activate, then maybe they might listen.

The re-work to get them going is quite extensive I'm told.
I think some other posts on the matter have indicated the obstacles.

Since I paid $800 not so long ago for a Bell 6000 HD on receiver, I didn't thing $299 for a *C unit with more options and better software was any problem at all. Add in the rebates and you can't go too far wrong.

When you phone to activate the 505, ask to to activate the PPV. Then ask if your $50 PPV credit is listed. If not the CSR will add it as all 505 buyers get it - old and new subs.

Just picked one up at the Source for 199 +tx.

Does the 505 and 500 use the same firmware, after one night the 505 shows current ver. 00.14 with no target, is this the most recent ver.?

The unit also came without the 7 front panel buttons (nice QA Moto).

Its great that it comes with all cables including component and DVI!

If the numbers are different, then NO, not the same.

Isn't the 500 at .78 or something.

I've heard they plan to harmonize all the code for 500, 505 & 530 towards year end.

That should help in a few problem areas and give my poor old 500 some of the nice 530 options like 12 hour clock and dimmable display, oh ya, & caller ID too.

Depends on the type of HDTV you have. It makes no difference (or may be worse than component cables) with CRTs

Only important with a fixed pixel device, like a plasma, lcd or DLP.
Any advantage is totally lost on any type of CRT based unit including direct view, front or rear projections due to the analog nature of the display devices.

And then it varies as well.*

By design DVI was never meant to be superior over Component, but since the signal is 100% digital, right out to the very last pixel, then it MAY be better.*

For the average person, not much difference.
For the guy that spent $100 of dollars for a $10 cable, LOTS of difference.
For the guy that bought a $10 cable, eh, about the same.*

Plus, for the moment, *C DSR505 and 530 receivers DVI outputs are not quite up to snuff and some compatability issues remain to be ironed out over the next few software loads we are told.

*Disclaimer: Your mileage may vary

Thanks ARR.
I have a Samsung DLP....use the DVI, S video or component? I would more than likely purchase the 505 then if the DVI is superior to the other two?
