Looks like a same-day release for Double Indemnity:

Fox's "The Mr. Moto Collection", Vol.1

Quote:
"Who's that man?"
"The name is Moto... adventurer, explorer, soldier of fortune... one of the Orient's mysteries. Nobody knows much about him, except that whenever he shows up, something usually happens."
Peter Lorre in the role of the inscrutable Mr. Moto:

Think Fast, Mr. Moto (Foster, 1937) - Moto travels to Shanghai to expose a murdering gang of diamond smugglers.

Thank You, Mr. Moto (Foster, 1937) - Moto travels to China to recover some ancient scrolls that reveal the tomb of Genghis Khan.

Mr. Moto Takes A Chance (Foster, 1938) - Moto travels to the Asian country of "Tong Mai" to help put down a rebel insurrection.

Mysterious Mr. Moto (Foster, 1938) - Moto escapes from Devil's Island and travels to England to expose a gang of assassins.

I enjoyed these films a lot. They've got elements of noir, adventure, action and mystery. Great looking prints, recently restored. Can't wait for Vol.2.

Double Indemnity - we watched the new release last night. Wow - great cast and story, with so much smart, witty, and 'sharp' dialogue. Much-enjoyed!!

So happy to finally have this. (Stanwyck's big hair notwithstanding.)

Just recently discovered this thread. I'm a big noir fan and have alot of the movies being discussed.

Two of my favourites that I haven't seen mentioned are "The Killers", and "The Killing". Stanley Kubrick's "The Killing" (1956) is a must see.

The Killers is an excellent noir, one of the best. Ava Gardner, a femme fatale goddess.

I like The Killing also. It has a similar vibe to The Asphalt Jungle, found in the first Warner set. Sterling Hayden in both.

Yes that's true. Both great films. I like the way Kubrick played with the timeline structure which would have been unusual in 1956. I've read that Tarantino was a fan of this film. If anyone's interested in this film it is available on Amazon.com for less than 11 dollars U.S. It's a good transfer.

I thought there were alot of similarities with the recently released "The Racket" and "The Big Heat".

Speaking of big in noir movie titles, I would like to get a good transfer of "The Big Combo". I have the Geneon disc, and the pq is poor. Still a good movie.

Yep, no doubt Tarantino is a noir fan. Reservoir Dogs borrows heavily (or blatantly steals) from two for sure -- The Big Combo and Kansas City Confidential.

Must be a dozen noirs with "Big" in the title. Leave it to the Coen Bros to get in on the fun, re-working The Big Sleep, turning it into The Big Lebowski.

DVDBeaver compared three different editions of The Big Combo and found all of them lacking:

Looks like Geneon's transfer is a botched PAL conversion. Image's release is the best of the lot, but it's OOP.

Here's another public domain noir that deserves much better treatment. I watched this one over the weekend, an early Gene Tierney film...

The Shanghai Gesture (von Sternberg, 1941) - Tierney plays the hot-blooded daughter of an international real estate magnate. Out on the prowl one night in exotic Shanghai, she enters a gambling establishment owned by one "Mother Gin Sling". Tierney is soon intoxicated by the atmosphere, declaring "It smells so incredibly evil. I didn't think such a place existed, except in my own imagination". Quite an amazing little movie.

I almost ordered "The Shanghai Gesture" for the cover alone. Gene Tierney was one gorgeous dame! Then I read about the bad pq on some dvd review site (can't remember which one) and changed my mind.
