yeah I heard on the news in the car on the way home...what a shame... they said they didn't want to pay him more than their top anchorperson Peter Mansbridge...but can you blame them... cash strapped and all, and can you see Ron doing 9/11 coverage, etc or some other major event? Sports != News, and fact is more people tune to News than Sports simply because it is human nature to do so.

I heard a figure of $600K.... holy crap. So Peter M is making less than that. Wow! A whole different class of living I guess and I only work like 2 blocks away!

Imagine walking away from half a million bucks a year! I wish I had that kind of pride!

The news tonight corroborated the $600k story. Also said that Don makes around $700k and that Ron made about $400k last year. I guess Ron probably has an offer at another network in his "back pocket".

I'll never understand why "sports people" make this kind of money (people, many working class people, pay them this willingly by going to games, etc), while Teachers, Policemen, etc have to scrounge for every penny from "unwilling" taxpayers...who begrudge a few $ in taxes, but pay hundreds to see "gorillas" play... End of rant.

I don't have a problem with what they pay him, what I can't understand is what kind of leverage does he think he has?

At least a baseball player can sign up with 29 other teams but Ron there's only one HNIC!

He could anchor ESPN's coverage and make more than he would here in Canada. It may be to late for this year so he might have to take the year off. He could start during the playoffs. Just in time for ESPNHD and ABC Sports playoff action.

It took me about 10 years to finally like the guy. He will be missed on the show. So who will be the replacement? A Woman?

I guess that's probably true and perhaps that was part of his negotiating tactics.

Let's hope he ends up at ESPN. Without Ron, no real reason to watch HNIC.

In the meantime, sign the petition

Kathryn Humprey from CityTV was alluding to the fact that people are saying that this might just be a big publicity stunt, and Labatts (the main sponsor) is saying "guys get this resolved"... so they may be willing to fork over the cash?

How is CBC going to get a quick replacement for Ron? Scott Oates? I don't think so... that guy is so dull, its not funny, and Cherry would rip him apart! Brian Williams? He doesn't seem to know anything about hockey, maybe figure skating or the olympics!

I honestly can't see Ron going to ESPN, Fox, etc as they probably wouldn't know who he is really as he has only been on HNIC, maybe something like local Leafs coverage by Global or CKVR but they probably can't afford his salary. I'm sure he would get the top dollar at ESPN but he would probably appear to be a nobody down there.

Well that is not so. You could have said the same thing about Hodge when he left. the show is content driven. And with the content being
The Toronto Maple Leafs
the show will go on and ratings will be maintained.

I sure hope this guy doesn't do HNIC anytime soon.

That's the nice thing about Maclean is that he was unbaised, unlike Cherry (who seems to favour the TML but doesn't let you know explicitly) and never indicated that he rooted for the TML although deep down I think he likes them or the CFs.

Correction: the Toronto Maple Leafs are another reason not to watch HNIC

Beerme1, you do realize that there are more than one CBC game on at a time? I watch Directv to watch the early HNIC game that DOESN'T inlcude that team from Ontario. The National feed usualy involves the Habs or Sens while the Ontario feed is usually the Leafs.

I read in todays paper that Labatt is pissed. If he comes back, thank them for putting the screws to the CBC.
