OK, here is my somewhat mixed up system.

Monitor: Toshiba 50hx81
Receiver: Kenwood VR-410
DVD player: Denon 2800
L+R speakers: PSB Stratus Gold
Centre speaker: PSB 100C (alpha)
Rear speakers: PSB Alpha-S
Sub: Janis 18 in. (rather old!!)
Rogers cable with SA 3100HD

That subwoofer is probably older than some of you guys! But it can really pump out the bass! (OK, probably not as tight as a newer one, but it makes me happy!)

I have a question: One thing I might lke to add is a single remote. However, the Kenwood receiver has a RF remote rather than IR. Are there any universal remotes that output RF to control a device? I should probably replace the receiver -- the remote is really flakey, quite a lot of the time it does not respond. Besides, it would be nice to be able to handle the 6.1 DTS on the Lord of the Rings DVD!

I sit about 11-12 ft from the TV and if I had to do it all over again, I would get a 57 in. since I only use this system for HDTV and DVD.

The 57" really finished it off. I stopped watching DVDs 6 months ago on my Toshiba 36" until I finally got a 16x9.

Me don't have a complete home theatre system yet...in the research stages...interesting though...in reviewing this thread i have noticed that for RPTV the most popular choice seems to be a Toshiba...with Hitachi coming in second...for Direct view...Sony seems to be the popular choice...hmmm...and i was leaning towards Sony if i were to go the RPTV route...hmmm...maybe i should give Toshiba a second look...any input on why so many of you decided on Toshiba? thanks

I guess it's a question of taste. For me the Toshiba HDX sets and the Pioneer Elite looked the most realistic, like you expected the things on the set to come right out of the screen. In the end it ultimately came down to cost. I just couldn't justify paying the high price of a Pioneer Elite. You can get a 57HDX82 for under $4000 now so I guess it's also getting into the budget of many people who until now have been sitting on the fence. Now if only we could reach that critical mass to stimulate largescale migration of broadcasters to HDTV

Here's and update of my systems:

For my TV viewing, I'll be using these components:

TV: Toshiba TW40X81 (Calibrated by JohnnyG)
Receiver: Kenwood VR-2080 (DD-DTS)
Front speakers: PSB Centuries
Center speaker: PSB Alpha Center
Rear speakers: PSB Alpha Mites
Subwoofer: PSB Subzero (8")

New home theater:

TV: Sony VPL-HS10 LCD front projector
Receiver: NAD Electronics T762
Front Speakers: PSB Stratus Silver
Center Speaker: PSB Stratus C6
Rear speakers: PSB Image 10S bipoles
Subwoofer: PSB Image Subsonic 6 (12")
DVD player: Panasonic RP-91
DVD recorder: Panasonic DMR-E30
LD player: Pioneer CLD-D504
VCR: JVC hi-fi (Not used much anymore)
CD: Kenwood 200 disc
Game system: Sony Playstation 2

For the time being I'll be switching my BEV 6000 receiver from room to room as needed until I can get a second HDTV receiver, hopefully a PVR.

My home theater room is not built yet, but it should be in the next month or so. Woohoo.

Let's see...

Onkyo 484 Receiver
Sampo 611 DVD
Toshiba 42" 16:9 HDTV
(2) PSB Alpha A/V's for the Front
(1) PSB Alpha Center for the Center
(2) PSB Alpha B's for the Rear

Finally got it all together:
TV: Sony Grand Wega 60" KF60XBR800
Fronts: B&W DM603s3 - Biwired
Surr: B&W DM601s3 - 25' runs, Chord Leyline speaker wire
Center: B&W LCR600 - Biwired
Sub: B&W ASW650, w. 6m Tributaries cable (Direct Series)
Receiver: ARCAM AVR-100 w. upgraded learning remote and new Bass Mgmt tweak.
DVD: Sony NS-715P - custom component cable w. silver content, Ultralink connectors. QED digital coax for the audio (overkill)
CD: older Sony 5-disc changer

Still trying to decide on whether to get a new VCR to add to the mix. They're pretty cheap these days but there's room in the rack and it might be convenient to have.

Next up: HDTV signal - BEV now or wait for Cogeco? As the playoffs get closer I may cave in and go with BEV.

If you do decide, you may wish to get a half-decent S-VHS machine for the higher resolution. Standard VHS is around 240 lines, while S-VHS has a maximum resolution of 400 lines. The cheapest S-VHS machines don't look much better than standard units, but some of the better ones look pretty good - they have noise cancellation, buffer memory, etc. Picture looks a lot smoother...

If you are going VCR then S-VHS is definitely the way to go. A decent one will cost CDN$700 to $1400. There are cheaper ones but they are not real S-VHS and I've had lots of problems with a cheaper machine. My 10 year old $1500 Mistubishi S-VHS VCR still outperforms the newer, cheaper one. Decent S-VHS tapes cost CDN$11 each and are not as good quality as they once were.

My next recording system will definitely be a PVR, hopefully HD. I got a taste of what a PVR is capable of with an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon in my computer. Once you use a PVR you will not want to go back to a VCR. PVRs are still relatively new to market so a lot of research may be required. You can combine a PVR with a DVD recorder or, if you are more adventurous, build your own HTPC (Home Theater PC).

For more information about HTPC see http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/for...forum.php?f=61
