I heard that once the internet via Satellite was dropped that that would free up half of Bird 82 for more bandwidth.

Now this makes me want to ask a question: I had heard that half of bird 82 was "fried" or broken - which is why the HD and the foreign channels were on there (less popular). Is that true? or is it just that the bandwidth from internet takes up the rest of it?

Not even close. DirecPC only uses 1 of the 32 transponders on N2(according to Lyngsat).

Actually, less than a quarter of the 32 transponders on N2 have been turned off (due to a power shortage).

So, unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of available space left on N2, even with the demise of DirecPC.

Nimiq 2 experienced a malfunction that affected the available power on the spacecraft on February 20, 2003. The satellite is currently generating sufficient power to operate only 26 of the 32 transponders.

No point in putting general popular channels on Nimiq 2 since the majority of people don't subscribe to HD or International. Plus if they had popular channels there, they could run into a shortage of the new Dishs by lots of people suddenly wanting to upgrade their dish. I believe Nimiq 2 will be the home of any new channels.

For their internet, they offered 512kb speeds and i believe a few thousand subscribers. I'm not sure how much room the average channel takes up.

i doubt it but we'll see. i read fox news would be 506 and MSNBC 507. there were similar rumours floating around that BEV would launch fox news on march 1 and obviously nothing happened. BEV is certainly a disappointment when it comes to adding new channels because of their technological limitations.

they have 60 more channels than starchoice does, and almost as many as rogers digital cable does.

BEV won't carry channels like Fox News, MSNBC, NFL Network, Military Television, Bloomberg Television etc. BEV seems to have a problem when it comes to carrying any new American channel that is approved by the CRTC. BEV's refusal to carry any of these channels indicates that the company is trying to discourage any American channel from trying to enter the Canadian market.
