Operation of Shaw's residential cable, satellite, Internet and home phone services will be consolidated into a new Consumer business unit. Shaw's enterprise services – including cable, telephony, satellite, and tracking – will be integrated into a new Business unit. Shaw's Media business will continue to be managed as a standalone unit.
Shaw also announced it has combined its engineering and IT functions into a single Technology and Network Operations (TNO) team.
Approximately 400 management and non-customer facing roles will be affected by the organizational changes. To support the new structure, Shaw will be hiring upwards of 100 people and investing resources in specific areas, including procurement, supply chain, marketing, pricing, network architecture, and next generation products.
I decided to post this in the Shaw Direct forum since it looks like Shaw will effectively be merging their satellite consumer business with their cable consumer business.
The other interesting implication is that Shaw doesn't seem to have any plans to sell or merge their satellite business with Bell Satellite.
Thinking on a more long-term basis, this could be good for SD. All new channel negotiations will be conducted with the one business unit and thus have more chance of appearing on SD (subject to capacity of course). Of course, each contract could stipulate "Cable-only" or "Satellite-only" but that's not so likely now that only the one unit is negotiating. Time will tell I suppose.
I am suspecting that this will result in a subtle attempt to convince us to switch to cable. I guess my excuse will be that my building does not provide good cable service. I used to have it and still use their internet because DSL is not available. I switched because of pixilation issues on HD.
