Washington — The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Thursday voted to require television makers to include tuners that can receive over-the-air digital signals starting in 2004 in an effort to jump-start a transition to digital television.
The FCC voted to require the equipment be installed starting with the bigger sets, and eventually all televisions with screens larger than 13 inches by mid-2007, turning aside objections from many manufacturers who said the costs were too high and few consumers need it. "We have to get the digital television transition back on track. This order we adopt today is a step in the right direction," said FCC Commissioner Michael Copps ahead of the three-to-one vote at the agency's monthly open meeting. http://rtnews.globetechnology.com/se...nology/techBN/ |
