Watched Joan of Arcadia last night on CBS HD...the PQ and audio were great. Checked CTV HD, the PQ was washed out and the audio seemed to be coming from the front speakers only....also sounded mono....

I just surfed past, but last night OC was on Fox in HD, DD5.1. On CTV it was 4:3 and DD2.0. The Fox DD5.1 sound was well mixed and extremely clean. The DD2.0 on CTV was muddy.

Hmmm...CTV is going to have a problem with FOX programming, I think. There's no contribution feed - only a broadcast ready ATSC bitstream. So in order to insert their own commercials, they'd need an MPEG 'inserter' like FOX gave the network affiliates.

The alternative isn't pretty...decode, then re-encode.

Incidentally, I watched ER on CTV Thursday night. They had 5.1 surround where the Detroit affiliate did not. Picture was a bit sharper, too.

Well, CTV must REALLY love their Big Ugly Bug (BUB) because they slapped it on Sopranos last night, eventhough they've got nothing to cover up Must bring a tear of pride to Rick Brace's eye everytime he tunes into his own channel...

I caught a few minutes of Sopranos last night while waiting for the news. The bug was their smaller transparent version, at least at that time.

If anybody managed to catch the Global HD broadcast of the Bills game yesterday, they had their Global logo in the top right corner (small and very unobtusive...nicely done). Perhaps CTV can take the hint.

Exclamation

There's a story in this morning's Vancouver Sun that the process to award Canadian tv rights for the 2010 Winter Olympics has begun, and CTV will be submitting a joint bid with Rogers (much to the dismay of the CBC, which has filed a complaint to the Competition Board). Presumably by then live HD broadcasts of the Olympics will be routine (I believe NBC has announced it plans to do 2006 in HD); it will be interesting to hear how Bell Globemedia and Rogers intend to rise to that technological challenge. And while I've grown increasingly weary of Brian Williams' Olympic schtick on CBC, I shudder at the thought of Rod Black as the Olympic telecast host...

BTW, CTV-HD bailed me out last night when NBCHD-E out of Boston forgot to "throw the switch" to bring us Third Watch in HD. And while that show's dark, grainy look isn't the best for comparison purposes, the video quality seemed alright on CTV-HD (except for the Big Black Bug, of course). More importantly, they also got the DD decoding right, for a change.

Again, Joan of Arcadia had weak PQ on CTVHD lats night, Third Watch right after it had almost no colour....it was almost B&W.

We should change the title of this thread to:

"CTVHD Continually Sucks and Nobody at CTV Gives a ****"

Watching the Sopranos tonight on CTV-HD-E, they had a decent, non-distracting whitish/transparent bug - at least it didn't assault my eyes the whole time. And then on Desparate Housewives on the West feed, CTV-HD-W had ONLY the ABC bug (which is the way a bug is supposed to be done - just transparent and unnoticeable unless you look for it).
Seems CTV is listening (at least a little), so let's keep on bitching at them!

OK, scratch my last comment; at some point (it was there at 9:25pm PST), they slapped their fat-ass BUBB (Big Ugly Black Bug) on Desparate Housewives. At least no simsub on ABC-HD.
Just when you think they're decent, they show you that indeed, they truly do SUCK!!!

Talking

I just gleaned this little nugget from the intervention by CTV President Rick Brace to Starchoice's omnibus HD channels:

Quote:
The Commission must put an end to the current practice by certain licensees “to act first and ask for regulatory approval later”. Otherwise other licensees will undoubtedly consider unilateral action without prior authorization.
Er, isn't this like the pot calling the kettle black, considering CTV started requesting simsubs for its HD channels even before OTA transmitters were in place

I am in contact with Press relations at CTV and discussing many of the issues discussed here so hopefully you'll see something on the Frontpage of the site by weeks end.
