Canadian Channels in UAE
I've recently moved to UAE and I wanted to know the best and cheapest way of watching Canadian/US channels here in UAE. Can I use FTA receiver and dish to watch them? Are they free or do I have to pay (I'm talking about TV channels offered in rogers basic tv package). I have never used FTA receiver or direct tv so any info would be highly appreciated.

Free FTA channels for UAE ---> http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/United-Arab-Emirates.html
The MBC channels might satisfy your US TV fix.. otherwise, nothing much in terms of North American programming. Your other alternative to watch live North American television is via streaming (google it and you'll be on your way)
Follow-up: Just took a peak at the UAE cable channel grid and you're not hurting for TV over there (Cnn, FX, Fox Movie Channel, TMC etc)

Another option if you have family back in Canada is to setup a Slingbox and control/watch a PVR remotely over the internet.

thanks kraven and magnet.
There are some western channels but I'm not sure how updated their programs are. I was wondering if I could watch real time live Canadian channels here. So i guess it's not possible to watch satellite channels like 107W Anik F1 or Galaxy 19 or 23?
Yeah i heard about slingbox but i'm not sure how that works and how much will it cost me monthly?

Slingbox is a box that streams TV from a set-top box that has TV service.
It cost no money to use itself (You just buy the hardware), but you need a TV and broadband Internet service at its end. At your end you use a computer or Slingcatcher device, and also a broadband Internet service.
It is not something you go and get at your end, you need to install one where the TV service you want is.

If I was in UAE.
I would aim for KTV 2 as some good EN shows can be seen it on.
Badr-4 (26E) is an excellent satellite
Al Jazeera English
BBC World News Middle East
Peace TV Middle East
KTV 2 (Kuwait)
Prices here in Canada. Over there you probably have to pay more.
1 meter dish = $50
dual LNB = $20 (allows support for 2 -8 receiver with proper mapping)
FTA receiver $20+
Install $50 here.
Other the hydro needed this programming should be free.
Note: I would use Lyngsat.com to check out what is available. Other English programs can be found on many channels on this satellite.
PS there might be something on the Aerial as well.
OTA: DB8 + Y5 2-6 + CM777. FTA: 30W + 72W + 87W + 97W

Wow, a blast from the past....
The ducting in the Persian Gulf is awesome.
When in Saudi in a previous life, we use to routinely catch the OTA stations from Dubai & Qatar, while at the hotel in Dhahran on the Gulf no problem.
I recall watching some BBC documentaries. One of which was a documentary about the House of Guitars in Rochester, NY. That was cool seeing that all the way over there.
UAE OTA TV should be light years ahead of Saudi. So be happy ya can get something.
Wasn't much time for TV while in UAE, but I remember a decent western influence there. Satellite TV was against the law in Saudi at the time if I recall??
Just guessing that ya should be able to see some of the same satellites that cover Europe from there, unless they have Spotbeams? Check out
http://www.satbeams.com/ for coverage maps. And as previously pointed out Lyngsat for any freely available content on specific Birds.
If ya wanna try online streaming content, I don't think they'd block content there like they would in Saudi or Kuwait, but just in case they do,
try using this free VPN client / service which will give you an IP address in the USA, http://www.hotspotshield.com
