Default audio connections

Couple questions, my old Denon receiver doesn't have USB inputs, the installers connected the tv using the composite RCA's, they connected the audio to the receiver using the stereo RCA's, am I going to get 5.1 from my receiver that way? Wouldn't using the optical to the receiver be better?

Is it better to run HDMI to the Toshiba TV, then patch the audio from the TV to the receiver using the optical? Would that result in less lip sync issues?
Thanks

No, you can't get 5.1 from RCA.

HDMI can do 5.1 but it may lag depending on your TV.

The audio on the STB is separate from the video. So, you can run HDMI to the TV for HD and an optical to your Receiver for 5.1. Optical can also do 5.1, but it won't lag.

Okay, so you mean optical right from the STB to the receiver or from the TV to the receiver (with the TV fed by HDMI from the STB?)

From the STB directly to the AVR. Here's the DD5.1 FAQ. Read the bolding (and the rest).

Ya, that's the way we have it but sometimes it's still a little out of Sync, must be my Toshiba TV I guess..?
Thanks

Another thing to do is find if your TV has a 'Game Mode' and turn it on. It's there to reduce lag but the picture does suffer a little. It may help.

Or... your Denon AVR will have an audio delay setting. Increasing this will do the same thing as reducing the picture delay on your TV.

Ya, I use the Denon audio delay, seems I'm always fiddling with it though.
Thanks guys
