Default Cisco E2700, E3500, or E4500 routers

If you are going to acquire a Linksys router you want to read this story about how Cisco has modified their EULA. (or you can search for "E2700, E3500, or E4500 routers" and see the firestorm)

quick synopsis
Quote:
Upon pushing an automatic update to those routers, it decided to make it mandatory to have a "Cisco Connect Cloud" to access your own router, bypassing and indeed eliminating your former credentials.

But it didn't stop there. Not only did Cisco make it mandatory, but within the privacy policy of "Cisco Connect Cloud," it included the right to check on all your web traffic. So you either accept this, or your former router is not going to provide you any service any longer.

Still not happy enough, the committee decided to go further. What if you're one of those despicable porn consumers they don't want using their pristine cloud? Ah, no problem, they'd just include in the terms and conditions of the mandatory "Cisco Connect Cloud" that if they caught you looking at the wrong stuff, they were entitled to kick you out of their flawless cloud. Never mind that in the process, they'd be bricking your router and your home network with it, since you now needed the "Cisco Connect Cloud" credentials to control your router!

Cisco is obviously getting feedback from disgruntled customers. Here's their response UPDATE: Answering Our Customers’ Questions about Cisco Connect Cloud

Bottom line - you don't need Cloud Connect, they don't track your internet usage, you won't be arbitrarily disconnected, they won't push firmware on you when auto-update is turned off …

If this were politics it would be a Friday walkback.

yeah I have a E4500 router and never signed up for the cloud computing because of these draconian terms and conditions. The new revised version however, is much more palatable and I have since flashed my router with the cloud version.

I do like having the remote management ability but in reality, I had it before. If you select a port and allow remote management on any non-cloud firmware you could gain full access to the admin page remotely anyway.

There are some new features that are more amicable in the new icloud remote management however. Just not sure if I want to keep it, you can re-flash your firmware to a non cloud version if you are not happy with it.

so I was running a pile of speed tests under the new cloud connect firmware. I have BB 50 and usually obtain 42-47 Mb/s when checking my connection speed. I noticed under the cloud firmware that I was down to 14.

I just re-flashed back to the latest non-cloud firmware, I think it has significant work to be done before i will try it again.
