Default Anyone else having Voip.ms problems? (June 7th)

I have two DID's with Voip.ms, a 905 and 647 number. I am using a CISCO SPA504G phone which has been working now for several months without incident.

My connection has had problems this week but today my numbers have not been working at all.

I am registered to the Toronto Server, I tried changing to the Toronto2 server and one line worked for about five minutes.

While typing this, one line came back for a minute or two, but then went out. (The CISCO phone indicator is green when working and yellow when not so you can see if its working or not without picking up)

Are others having problems?

Well something funny is going on here... I just traced out both toronto.voip.ms & toronto2.voip.ms and they both resolve to the same IP of 174.137.63.206 with a RDNS of dns2-c.crtnetworks.net

That tells me that Toronto and Toronto2 are both the same. Did one server fail and they flipped it over so everything now goes to just the one server?

Also from what I found the Toronto servers are not in Toronto ... they are in Hamilton at caratnetworks.com

As far as I can tell it's been like that for a while. I've been using toronto2 for some time now and my registration always says;

toronto2.voip.ms
registered
toronto.voip.ms
registered

toronto and toronto2 have been the same for awhile.

After contacting the company, they said try the Chicago server. I changed the point of presence on one DID to Chicago and magically both worked again.

It makes no sense. I will try to switch back to Toronto later today.

That's frustrating. No problems with voip.ms on the Toronto server for me this morning.

Hello

As a diagnostic you can ALWAYS try one of our newers servers that have the latest software. We specially recommend canadian users to go to Chicago or Seattle servers. However the truth is that any server in north america will have a decent ping for your VoIP. calls.

Just keep in mind that canadian customers do not HAVE to use a canadian server.

Thanks

Interesting. I've been having some minor problems lately (nothing like Hugh experienced, though there was one time on Tuesday when a caller got a busy signal - the call didn't even make it into the CDR), like one of the parties not hearing the other for the first couple of seconds. I'll give the Chicago server a try for a while (I've been using "montreal" since I signed up in February).

What is bizarre to me is how both DIDs worked yet I only changed the point of presence on one DID. If it was the server then I would have expected one line to work and the one on Toronto to remain problematic.

On a related note, a question

I was hesitant to change servers because I always thought that if you changed servers, you may have some problems retrieving voicemail. Am I mistaken?

I just did a quick test and left a message from my cellphone. I was able to retrieve it, though I noticed that the recording was the default recording, not the "Please leave your name blablabla" message I had recorded a while back. Weird.

Edit: Here's why, from the voip.ms wiki: Please note that Voicemail system is not centralized. It is independent and per server. For Example, If your DID is currently on the Los Angeles POP (Server) and you dial *97 while registered on New York, you will not access the same Mailbox. The same issue can occur if you change the POP (server) of your DID to another server.

So my understanding is tha if you have messages on server X and switch to server Y, you won't be able to access messages stored on server X. Seems like it's the same story for the recorded message.

MichelR, thanks.

I remember reading that a long time ago but couldn't remember where. So changing servers is not wise if you have voicemail on the original server and I assume you have to redo your voice mail recordings on the new server.

Yep - it doesn't take long but I've always hated recording those messages.

We were having issues with the Toronto server for a long time. Callers would get a busy tone when calling us, yet we could make calls. Or else my box would not register, etc etc.
I switched to the Montreal server in April and have had no issues since...
