I can see their carrier partners not being too happy with all iPhones being called "the iPhone". The numbering/naming system makes it easier for them to differentiate and advertise without having to quote device specs.

However, they could also potentially call it the iPhone HD, iPhone 4G, or iPhone LTE.

iPhone X is how they should keep it goin... iPhone 5 is what people expect so go with it.

I dont think many want to say i have an iPhone 5 HD LTE

It will not be called a iPhone 5.
I love when "experts" have absolute proof about Apple rumours.

lol, it is an ongoing problem. All of these "experts" saying what the new Apple product is going to be. And most of the time they are not right. All they do is drive up the expectations of consumers. So when the actual product is released, people are dissapointed.

That's exactly what happened when the iPhone 4S was announced.

The rumors are circulating now that the next iPhone will have a 4" display. I think now would be a great time to do this as 4" is still a comfortable size, and it will still be easy to use with one hand.

I admit I was one of the dissapointed ones, after reading all of the rumors before the actual unveiling. It was short lived though. After I really looked at the phone, I liked it.

A 4" screen would be a nice size for the next iPhone. Some of the other rumors that I am hoping is true, that it will have NFC capabilities.

@ cooper83

It's called logic. Apple isn't going to call a 6th generation device a 5.

Where's your absolute proof it will be called a iPhone 5. Seeing as there were no iPhone 2 or iPhone 3.

nic78, your logic is flawed if you think you can accurately predict the rumours that surround Apple products.

And for the record, I'm not, and never have predicted a name for the next iPhone. Why? Because I have better things to do with my life than obsess over the naming strategy of Apple products.

There is more "proof" that it will be called the iPhone 5 than there is that it won't.

In all reality, there is no real proof either way. It will be called whatever they decide to call it and none of our guesses will have any impact either way.

Then how did they come up with iPhone 3/3g/3gs and iPhone 4/4s?

The iPhone models have been:
iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S

Does that make for 6 generations, or three generations with upgrades? I would go with three generations, so the next iPhone should be called the iPhone 4.

Of course, calling the second generation the iPhone 3G makes people this this was labelled as the third generation. In fact, it was named after the 3G network. The only one with a name that makes sense is the iPhone 4, but ONLY if you consider each of the three that preceeded it as a complete generation. In fact, my iPhone 3Gs is so close to the 3G that I consider the 3Gs an upgrade to the 3G, not a new generation.

All of this proves one thing - beyond any doubt, we can create mountains out of molehills, and spend much time talking about nothing! Duh! We will find out what the phone is when Apple wants us to know, and not before!!!

Apple even keeps their retailers in the dark - just before the 4s was released, the retailer I deal with was quite convinced they were about to release the iPhone 5!

I think it's safe to call it. iOS6 is not a rumor anymore.

I like the current size and the iphone 4S has been great even without any cell service. I don't know whether to wait for the new phone or not before buying my own iphone with a 3 year plan. Bigger is not better for sure. The battery of the 4S needs charging too often.

A new iPhone is likely to be announced in September. If you can wait two months, I'd highly advise you to wait and see what Apple has cooking. Nothing is worse than seeing a new device much better than your own, and knowing that it will be nearly three years before you can get one.

And if you don't like it, you can still get an iPhone 4S, which will probably get a price drop anyway.
