Peter Loubardias was relieved of duty in Calgary a couple of years ago and he went back to cover dust storms in Saskatchewan. I will miss his unique approach to play by play: cheer for the opponent.

Best are Emrick and Cuthbert
@Johnny Canuck: I do not follow hockey but is that Chris Cuthbert who does the CFL games? If so, he should be banned from ever using a microphone. His voice is so high pitched, he sounds like a teenager. Most annoying voice ever. Dogs howl when he speaks. When he gets excited my blood pressure goes up 20 notches. |

Bob Cole: He doesn't tell you what is happening, he tells you what he thinks is happening or is about to happen. Often he gets it wrong.

One cool thing about watching a hockey game on CBC, provided you have a 5.1 sound system. Disconnect the center channel speaker, and you lose all commentary during the game. You still hear the ambient sounds of the crowd, the skates & puck, as well as the in-arena announcer, but the TV announcers use the center channel for all the chatter.

I must be dense for not thinking of that but is there not a bit of bleed through into the other speakers?

The volume of the ambient sound is not as loud, because I think they either use the arena's microphones, or the CBC (NBC?) places the other mics around the arena. This may or may not work in the US arenas depending on who sets up for broadcasts, but when the CBC sets up for HNIC, that's what they do. |

Greg Millen drove me so crazy during the Caps-Bruins series I put it on mute and have streamed the Capitals radio broadcast ever since.
Their guy (John Walton) is a decent play caller but gets very excited when the Caps score. |

My favourites are Bob Cole and Bob Miller, the voice of the LA Kings. I can't stand Jim Hughson, he is a huge Canucks homer. I also hate Pierre Maguire too. I am so glad he has gone to NBC.

I really like Bob Cole. He reminds me of the great Danny Gallivan.

best: Rick Jeanerette from Buffalo, but of course I'm biased
worst: whoever it is that does the NY teams on MSG.

Don Whitman. His call of the '94 playoffs early rounds with the Canucks will be with me forever.

@sailmaker, same Cuthbert, and yes, his voice can be high pitched.
However, he's also one of the few guys who knows when to shut up and is one of last remaining guys who knows when to modulate his voice. He has more than two volumes (soft and loud) and doesn't fall in love with his own catchphrases like others. His "golden goal" call is a classic and almost ranks up there with "Henderson Henderson Henderson" (Foster Hewitt), Jim Robson's elegantly simple call on Nystrom's 1980 Cup winner, as well as Danny Gallivan's understated call on the Lafleur OT winner that ultimately ended Cherry's coaching career. Unfortunately, there are almost no pbp guys that rank up there with any of Robson, Gallivan, Hewitt, or Kelly any more. On the other hand, your mention of the CFL makes me think of the worst broadcaster anywhere: Rod Black. |

I'm sorry, but the worst sports broadcaster has to be Brian Williams. Fortunately he just does hosting stuff, and can easily be avoided by watching things like the olympics in the daytime instead of primetime.

Worst: Bob Miller and Jim Fox (LA), play by play guy for St.Louis, Terry Crisp and Pete ??? (Nashville), Bob Cole, Jim Hughson, and Ray Ferraro. Also hated listening to Peter Loubardias or however you spell it, thankfully he isn't around any more.
Best: Hard to say, always hated Pierre McGuire, but I'd rather listen to him then Ferraro. At least he isn't biased towards one time and has a bit of knowledge. Would probably have to go with the Sabres announcers for best. |

Ferraro has irritated me like no other during these playoffs. I don't know if it's because he's down on ice level, but all he does is yell. It grows tiresome by the 2nd period.
