Default Can not Transfer File

Hi folks. Can think of where else to ask this question.

I have a 10gig file I I've tried to transfer from my C drive to an external HD and a thumb-drive, but no go; a tonne of space on the EHD and the TD is a 16gig. It will transfer fine within the C drive, or drive D, but nothing past that.

XP
3GHz
1.5gig Ram

Maybe this is just a(nother?) windows glitch? I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Scrap it. Someone else already informed me of the problem. Looks like FAT32 is the culprit.

Tried to delete this thread but couldn't find the option. My apologies for wasting anyone's time.

Max file size with FAT32 is 2 GB. That will affect almost all USB flash drives. Not sure if Windows can format flash drives to NTFS.

FAT32 has a 4GB file limit.

I must have been thinking of FAT16, which is 2 GB. The FAT32 file size limit is actually 4 GB minus 1 byte. 4 GB is close enough most of the time.

I haven't tried it with flash drives, but I have formated much larger USB connected hard drives with NTFS and also EXT3. So just give it a try and see what happens.

ScaryBob: Go to My Computer/Manage/Device Manager/Disk Drive/whatever device you want to change to NTFS/Properties/Policies/Optimize for Performance/OK

Now, when you right-click to bring up the format menu, you will also have the option for NTFS.

Hell, I didn't know; found out how on another forum late, late last night.

Cheers.

I format all my flash usb drives to NTFS as soon as I get them by the method noted by Wanderlustus. Works every time and never have to worry about the 4GB limit.
