No, they will be blacked-out or pre-empted with other programming. CNBC typically will show the CNBC Europe feed in these cases. MSNBC will show To catch a predator reruns.

In the press release, they have a link to the DAILY_SCHEDULES.pdf.

It is interesting that CTV, TSN and Sportsnet will all have a prime-time highlight show hosted by different people. What is the point of having 3 different highlight shows? Wouldn't TSN and Sportsnet be better off showing other live sporting events during prime-time for those who would rather watch baseball or football or whatever else may be on, or does the world of sports grind to a halt during the Olympics?

Also, it is interesting that CTV and Sportsnet's prime-time highlight shows are listed as "live" but start at 7pm in each timezone (8pm Atlantic), so obviously it is only live in the Eastern and Atlantic timezones and tape delayed everywhere else.

Out of curiosity, why? Why is NBC available while CNBC and MSNBC are not (in terms of the Olympics)? They are all part of NBC Universal, are they not?

CNBC and MSNBC are not licensed to provide Olympics coverage to Canada. Since they provide a feed directly to Canadian BDUs, they have to provide alternate content for those time slots. NBC is broadcast over the air and doesn't provide a feed to the BDUs, so Canadians get the same signal that the Americans get.

More than likely, NBC, CNBC and MSNBC on BDU's here in Canada will be sim-subbed as they don't have the rights to show the Olympics here in Canada. However, US feeds of NBC, CNBC and MSNBC are available on Ku-band FTA satellite so one could still watch the US Olympics coverage with such a system installed.

On the flip side, historically during past Olympics on cable here in Buffalo, I don't ever recall the Canadian coverage being blacked out or subbed here. There's only 2 Canadian stations on cable here, CBC and CTV, and both are SD. Quite often though if CTV is showing the same program as a Buffalo local station, Time Warner will toss infomercials in it's place. If this is CTV's first time, should be interesting to see what happens.

No, CTV covered the Vancouver 2010 winter games.

No, NBC won't be sim-subbed. CTV would only have the right to ask for that if they were showing the identical production. CTV and NBC will each be producing their own broadcasts so no sim-sub rights.

I don't recall US Olympic coverage being sim-subbed in any past games, at least on a terrestrial channel.

Why do you think it will be different this time?

How could it be ... NBC will be showing little live ... the broadcast times are completely different.

Not to mention 1992, 1994 and Calgary 1988.

I don't think the NBC coverage will be simsubbed for the reason Sport Fan said, or blacked out either.

However, it does seem to me that simsubbing and blackouts are getting more and more thorough and protective of Canadian rights. E.g. Sportsnet 1 being simsubbed on basic analog cable over US broadcast channels; Formula 1 being blacked out live on SPEED when in previous years we had a choice of broadcasters.

I think blackouts of the US Olympic coverage are a very real possibility, perhaps not this time, but perhaps next time round. It seems to be the way we are headed commercially.

We should all stop worrying about possible sim-subs on NBC (the real network broadcast/OTA station). As many have said here the coverage of NBC vs CTV is independent. You can only sim-sub programs that have the same content (a certain % of the content must be the same. I think that figure is over 90%). CTV and NBC use different announcers/cameras and show events at different times so it can never apply.

It is the content (Olympics in this case), not the commercials that the local broadcaster has bought the domestic rights to. The fact that the program is not identical is irrelevant since NBC has not bought the rights to show the Olympics in Canada.

In my mind, it is only a matter of time before the big 4 US broadcast networks are removed from Canadian BDUs completely. This would remove the vast majority of simsub issues. The big 4 were originally provided on cable (and later DTH) to add variety because there weren't enough Canadian networks. Now three are more than enough Canadian networks and most of the shows on American networks are also shown on Canadian networks, so the need for American networks on cable is greatly diminished. Also, there is very little programming the the US networks own the international broadcast rights to, so there could be an argument that the BDUs are infringing on international copyright laws.

My on-screen guide with Shaw shows NBC's coverage (on both the Detroit and Spokane feeds), however it is tape delayed and seems to be a 1 hour wrap up. My Shaw guide also shows MSNBC's coverage as being on, but it seems to be limited to US women's soccer games. I do wonder if CTV is allowing NBC to broadcast events in Canada they aren't interested in showing?
