Default 8642 personal media player

looking at the best buy website for the 8642 they advertise this:

"Personal media player enables display of photos and playback of video and audio from standard-based home network connected devices (requires optional software)
An Ethernet port enables a connection to your wired home IP LAN for advanced services such as content sharing to the set-top from compatible devices"

Has this been enabled???

Mr Shady,

How about MOCA, to use as a ethernet bridge. Is that enabled? No one seems to be able to answer this.

(Plug 8642 into your home network, then your 4642 ethernet port acts as another LAN jack for your network.)

I highly doubt that is enabled. These STBs are so underpowered, using them at network bridges would put too much load on the processor and cause them to wear out faster.

I doubt very much that bridging ethernets would be a good idea. Rogers has no idea what networks you might be bridging in, and you have no idea what networks Rogers might have. You can suspect they'll both be in the private space, but without actual knowledge you open the possiblity of creating networking conflicts/issues that might actually spread beyond your home into the Rogers network spaces. Moreso if your other network is a Rogers Internet connection.

If Rogers was motivated (pause for the readers to all finish uproarious laughter ) they COULD publish a network space reserved for home users (and non routable by Rogers). I would not hold my breath. Without an agreed 'central authority' for network assignments, I'd have to agree with not allowing bridging.
