Default CBC channel 702 only 720p?

Noticed this Saturday prior to Hockey and don't watch much CBC.

Is this Cogeco putting this at 720p instead of 1080i or something at my end.

Probably Cogeco, as this is what CBC goes out as....

CBC has been 720P since September.

Yeah, some stations are 720p, others 1080i. Difference is not noticeable to me. Most people think 1080i is superior simply due to the numbers, but progressive scan is always better than interlaced. Sports look best in 720p but there is almost zero difference.

They are really both the same though when it comes down to it, until we see the day where 1080p gets pushed OTA. (If even possible with the bandwidth requirements?)

Cheers.

What bugs me about it which I don't recall noticing until we got back this winter when it came to my attention is that their is a lag for a couple of seconds on my LCD (Samsung) and the TV shows the switch down whereas between other 1080i stations in HD which most of the rest are it is a seamless switch. Very irritating if going back and forth between a hockey game on CBC and another game being broadcast

This is due to your TV taking its time to change formats. Some TVs only take 2 seconds, some take 10, including a "mad scramble" of the video sometimes, depending on the make/model of the TV. It's possible to set up your STB to only send say 1080i and you would not have the issue.

I've noticed the annoying lag on my Samsung Plasma as well. So I just tried this out 57, and the lag is still there. What I did was went into the device settings (turned off unit, then push settings) and went to compatibility and disabled 720p.

I then tried it out, going to channels I know are in 720p. They get converted to 1080i, great. But when I go back to a real 1080i channel, the lag happens. All HD stations were in 1080i... but it didn't cure any lag issue for me. Even happens when you go to an SD format.

57 - We used to be able to output Rogers at different resolutions, before this new firmware that changed everything.. I don't care much for SD channels anymore, but I see a big issue in having to decide between 720p or 1080i output for all channels. Rogers is taking a 720p channel, interlacing it to 1080i, only for the TV or other processor (A/V, external..) to make it 1080p, makes no sense. If you believe you have better upconverting and deinterlacing in your other processor (such as an A/V receiver with an HQV Vida chip or dvdo iscan duo with ABT chip etc..), you're losing out on its value and relying on the 8642HD to do most of the work. Is there a way to currently change this output setting? If not, do you think Rogers will bring this feature back in a future fw update (maybe in one of those daily 2am updates..) thx

DigitalRocks:Turn off all the options except for 1080i. SD channels may be sent as 480i, which would cause a delay there. There should be no difference between channel changes if only 1080i is enabled. You can usually check this by pressing "info" or similar button on the TV remote to see the incoming signal to the TV.

TL_Gator: This is a Cogeco forum, so your question is off topic here and no, they won't change the 8642 output since they want the new HD IPG to be HD all the time. Please use the 8642 threads in Rogers if you have additional questions - the topic has already been discussed there.

If you are using the Pace RNG200N and find this works please let me know what settings you make, not sure I know what to change.

57: Thanks for input and trying to solve this annoying problem.

Another thing I have noticed is on my Samsung 720p LCD when I turn the TV on and use the last button and if it is tuned on CBC to begin I get the lag here as well. Then if I press last to go back to CBC get the lag again this happens until I have done the last move back and forth between channels about 3-4 times then it is speedy. The box is not a PVR just the big old Motorola HD box.
Is this probably an incorrect setting ie: should it be set as just 720p?

Most TVs prefer 1080i and I doubt your LCD is 720P, probably 768P, therefore it's usually better to use 1080i since most HD channels are 1080i and there would then be one less conversion. Here are the FAQs on the topic:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=73528 Native

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=87543 Upconversion

As mentioned in the FAQs, try both and see which you prefer.

Hey this actually worked... i've been flipping back and forth from all sorts of channels I know broadcast in different formats and the lag is gone. Even the SD channels are showing being converted and detected by my TV in 1080i. Not that the picture quality is any better of course, but it keeps the tv in 1080i so there is no flipping necessary. Cool, I appreciate it, this lag has bothered me since getting this receiver...

Goldberry - Turn off your receiver with the power button. Then push settings and you should get the "Pace User Settings" menu. Go to 'TV Display Capability' and leave 1080i set to 'YES', and turn the rest to 'NO' (720p, 480p, 480i, 1080p24 Pass, 1080p30 Pass, 1080p60) Push the left button to exit that menu, then power to exit the Settings menu all together. Then give it a try....

Here are the settings I use:
1080i no
720p no
480p yes
480i no
1080p24 pass yes
1080p30 pass yes
1080p60 yes

I tried setting just the 1080p settings to yes, but it forces you to have one of the top four selected. As I seldom, if ever, use SD I chose to leave 480p enabled.

Now all HD channels are up converted to 1080p60.
