Default Daylight Saving Time

Tonight's the night for most of us. Don't forget to turn your "clocks" ahead one hour before going to bed tonight. That's, of course, any timekeeping devices that don't get their own signal or are programmed correctly to change the time appropriately.

Some older devices may not change on the proper date since we now have 1 month more DST since 2007. For those older devices with incorrect firmware, I have them set to "manual" instead of "auto DST" and I set them manually twice a year. You could see if there is new firmware available for your older devices. For items with new firmware, you may still need to enable "auto time zone (or DST) updating" or similar functionality.

On Sunday morning check all your devices and make sure that any PVR scheduled recordings are still set up properly. Some devices like telephones may require you to turn them on/off or will reset with the first incoming call, etc. For many people with digital devices, this may require digging out those operating manuals.

Whenever I purchase a new device with an operating manual, I also download that manual from the manufacturer's website to my computer and put it in an appropriately-labelled file.

@57, @pinza: I don't wait until I've bought the product. I download the manual when I'm still researching a purchase. I can't count the number of times that reading the manual has made me decide not to make a purchase as it makes clear what functionality a product really has as opposed to the functionality the manufacturer claims in a glossy brochure, web site page etc.

I have only a handful of things I need to set:
Microwave oven, wall clocks (one is a nice one that is supposed to support auto DST, but I go it cheap because it is hard programmed to the old DST dates-DST can be turned off), MP3 player, wristwatch (yes I still have one, but for dressing up, clock radio (it has a DST on/off switch, which add/subracts and hour), and car radio.

The computers and STBs/DVRs set themselves.

Had to set the car, microwave, oven, and two clock radios.

I'd support switching to DST all year round...after I'm no longer responsible for Microsoft Exchange servers. They botched that badly with the last DST adjustments back in 2007.
