I was playing around with my new DVD writer making a back up DVD of all my mp3 music and just for fun, I dropped the disc in my HT DVD player to see if it would recognize and play the music and it worked !
All of my tunes are 100% VBR mp3 which makes them roughly 15 MB in size. By my calculation at 192 for a bitrate that would mean you could put well over 1000 tunes on 1 DVD. Neat for party mixes. Tonight I'm going to try writing .wav on a DVD to see if that works.

What model DVD player do you have? The vast majority of players will not acknowledge such a disc.

Toshiba SD3900.
VBR mp3 really screws up the time counter on the display (just like with Winamp), but they sound great.

That's an interesting find! Does it read all the files? I've seen dozens of threads on other forums asking for this capability and the answer is always "none that I know of".

Ya it reads them all.
Obviously the player cannot display the entire list of songs When the DVD is written it organizes the song titles alphabetically which could be a good thing (it makes it easier to find a specific tune). The is no random (shuffle) feature on the player, so I guess if you wanted a specific play order you would have to manually create the order before writing the disc.

I have done the same thing. both HT DVD players will play mp3's on a cd-r so I copied a DVD-R full of mp3's and dropped it into both HT DVD players and no problem reading/playing them at all...

My Sony 5-discs DVD player can play MP3 CD-Rs as well. With 5 discs full of MP3s, that's a lot of music to play on random.

At 1000 tunes per disc (192 bitrate) that would be over 60 hours of music on 1 disc... And if your disc got pooched or swiped, you'd be out $2

I think there is a JVC car head unit out there that does it for ~$400.

All I want is a portable CD player that can play MP3s from a DVD-/+R disc. Then I can buy a cheap adapter for the car.

According to the FS website these players do support mp3. FS has a Curtis player for $230. I can't vouch for the name, but it might just work !

I believe the deck in the new Acura TL plays DVD-Audio discs, but not DVD Video. I'm not sure if it plays MP3s though, let alone MP3 tracks on a DVD disc.
