Cool TV channels choice

Why don't we a choice of selecting channels we are interested. Cogeco for example, in a basic package, among others includes 4 religious, 2 ethnic, gameTV, 4 sports and Fox; none of this apply to many seniors or to families! It is not fair we have to pay but have no choice. I would like have the Al-Jazeera news, real World News rather than listening to CNN, a polarized US politics. Split: religion, sport, ethnic as a choice rather than part of the package! Basic package channels should consist of educational, science, discovery that kids and parents would appreciate, and for senior a good news channel like Al-jazeera and BBC !!!! Did you know that many Al Jazeera contributors are ex BBC!!!!

The service providers must abide by the rules put forward by the CRTC. Therefore basic cable (and satellite) services have certain channels that must be there by law.

This may soon change as more a-la-carte options are being put forward but true/full a-la-carte selection is not yet an option for customers with a service provider.

(The definition of "basic" is changing a bit with the analogue to digital changeover discussed in the Cogeco, Rogers, etc. forums) This means that eventually all channels will be digital and eventually you may be able to have a true a-la-carte selection option, but that is likely still a few years off.

(Rogers recently implemented a test programme in London for a very basic plus a-la-carte option.) Note that even with this starter pack, there is a basic set of channels.
