Let's just say that many of us are having similar issues with audio/video, etc.
Many of us have the exact same equipment setup - ie, no changes to our environment.
For many of us, the ONLY thing different is the new firmware.
I think one can feel comfortable to claim that the (new) issues we are now experiencing are directly related to the new firmware - and not hardware issues with our 8642 boxes.

Where O Where are you Rogers .... what are you doing to fix this ???!!!

Is anyone else also having constant reboots in the last two days or so? Sometimes the box is doing nothing, just tuned to a live tv program. I tried unplugging it and leaving it for a few minutes etc.

No problems with rebooting here. Oddly, that's one of the bugs I've rarely experienced. I've only had my terminal reboot once when i had an on demand show paused.

How funny is that yyzlhr, my box rebooted a few times while paused watching something On Demand. I thought it was just a fluke.

All was fine here for the last few days... wife just came in to say '' here we go again ; almost all the channelsl are now black again!! ARGHHH!

(This is my second 8642 box - clearly its the firmware.)

How do we start the class action lawsuit to get a rebate on our bills for denial of service?

Black channels again you say ?
Same here.
For example - tonight, on one of my 8642's, MuchLoud and that stupid Aquarium HD channel were blacked out - yet on my other 8642 they were fine.
I rebooted that pvr and it did not fix the issue.

I have attached a picture of what gets displayed when the channel is blacked out.

My box just rebooted for the fifth time today. This time, at just after 9pm, I was recording two shows, and trying to watch a recorded one. Earlier today, I was just trying to watch a recorded show, hit pause, then it rebooted. I know this is a firmware thread, but seriously, is it too much to ask to just be able to watch TV?

Hmm.. my "black channels" manifests itself differently. It just displays a black screen and the channel banner. I don't get the service unavailable message. Mine will fix itself if you just wait it out or if you reboot the terminal.

@Viper359. I think it might be your terminal. I know the firmware sucks, but between my 4642 and 8642, it has only rebooted twice (once for each terminal) and it was while I had an On Demand program paused. Also, I almost never watch live tv as I don't like commercials and I often get interrupted with phone calls, emails, etc. Therefore I'm constantly recording two shows while watching a recorded program. Have never had an issue where the terminal rebooted.

I am noticing that both my boxes seem to be downloading some sort of software upgrade at 2-3AM almost every other day, but nothing seems to be getting fixed!

I am not sure if it is or not. A few friends have had this rebooting issue for a day or two, then it seems to just vanish. I posted hoping that someone else experienced this today.

I tried the typical links 57 posts for checking signals etc, checked my cabling, checked my a/v wires etc. Anything else someone can think of I can try checking?

I dont think a class action law suit is the right apporoach.

The better approach is to return all defective boxes to rogers with a request to have them trplace with refurbished boxes using the old firmware.

New boxes with flawed software are equateable to hardware failures.

This will allow them to stop using critical resources to service peoples calls without proper solutions and focus on fully re-developing a working firmware upgrade and re-deploy it at a later date.

Seems logical to me. I replaced an 8642 with a brand new one with the old firmware and ive used it for a week without any rebooting and black picture issues. This is my solution for the time being.

For those who have the whole home service....they will need to pause it for the time being. Considering that rogers isnt really charging for the convinience service of multi-room service.... its not really a huge issue.

Just a patience issue.

Default Some good news.....

After getting next to zero help from email tech support for the cable tv side, I finally got someone who actually seems to have a clue, and was able to provide more information other than....."We need to send a tech out" I was getting so frustrated I was getting nasty. Which I feel bad for this guy, as he is actually trying to help. Below is their response. My name is blanked out, and the support reps name as well. Just to prevent people from emailing asking for helpful him.

Dear ******* *********,

Thank you for emailing the Rogers Digital Cable TV Technical Support
Team.

My name is ******. I would be more than happy to assist you with your
concerns.

Please note that the issues which you have described (ie. random reboots
and the recordings not playing back), have been identified with the
current firmware. The matter has been escalated to the Engineering Team.

With regard to the original inquiry, in reference to the PVR rebooting
after the recording ends, this is a new issue. Please advise if this is
periodic or if it occurs all the time. Are you able to tune to one of
the recordings in progress? Are you able to watch another one of your
previously recordeed programs? Do you receive an error message? Do you
have a PVR Extender connected? Please provide the serial number of the
device in question.

The item listed in post 728 almost looks like an SDV issue. Perhaps people with black channels have an issue with the return signal to the node, exacerbated by the new firmware?
