Hi,

I guess this is the best place to post this.

I'm in Gatineau (Aylmer), Quebec.
Last Saturday I aimed my 91XG towards Lyon Mountain to get WCFE and it was coming in unusually strong so I ran a scan. I also picked up 2 WPTZ and 4 VPT (WETK) channels over 150 miles away. Also 2 Stations from Montreal also came in but I usually have to point that way to receive them.

Then pointing south to Watertown, I was able to receive WNPI and Fox and CBS from South Colton, but nothing from Watertown (oddly enough). That lasted for most of the day. Then Sunday, nothing except the usual.

I too checked the conditions about 9am, Saturday 17th, and noticed that
WCFE ch57-1/RF38 and WPBS 18-1/RF 23 were coming in very strong.
Both lasted until after 1pm when I had other things to do.

Oh boy, I sure hope there's maintenance on Mt. Royal tonight. Gotta try a scan westward (towards Montreal) to see what I can reach stations in the Ottawa area. That would be an absolute feat for me!

T'was a great tropo night yesterday. I was bringing in 18.1.2, 38.1.2.3 and real channel 23 (57.1.2.3).

I think you'll still come to the conclusion that it depends. Tropo is like an on/off switch - either the path is open or it is not.

What i like to now is, the gain of n/m that u experience ie 10 db or less...maybe more ?

During those hot nights when the out-of-town stations are booming in, they are booming in as strongly as if you lived right beside the transmitter. For the few moments, minutes, or hours that they are coming in, they are coming in as if it were a hometown channel.

I'm completely guessing here, but I would not be surprised if I had to put a db figure on it, it could be above 30 or even more.

Sometimes these tropo channels can lock-in strongly with a small antenna pointing completely sideways to the city it is coming from.

The bottom line is, you do not need to choose your antenna based on your desire to lock-on to tropo channels. When the tropo is coming in well, whatever antenna you have is likely to work.

Choose the best antenna for your situation and enjoy the bonus channels whenever they come in.

And even if you have the best antenna on earth, you won't be able to get stations that are just plain too far away - except for during those brief moments.

Enjoy your OTA.

Ill add on top of that that tropo also varies in strength, with the big tropo events bringing in the most stations, weaker tropo events occur more often but may just increase stations in markets at the fringe of your reception area, or just over, while big tropo events will bring everything in from a considerable distance outside of your normal reception area (in the right direction), and while the duct is open it will be quite reliable and usable
