Default Wish you Were Here - Immersion 5.1 Bluray

Hi Folks, I borrowed the new Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here Bluray looking to play the 5.1 on my home theatre - but - NO surround mix. Tried all kinds of settings, but only surround "simulations."
I have a Denon AVR-2307C1 ( about 6 years old ) and I'm assuming the problem is that the amp doesn't have the right "software" to decode the audio- as it does not to play Tru-HD or DTS master for instance - but at least it will still decode those as DD or DTS.

Anything I can do ?

Thanks !

If your amp cannot decode the audio, then you should set your BluRay player to do so.

If you are connected by optical or coax, set your BluRay player to output bitstream (rather than PCM - optical/coax can only handle 2-channel PCM) and you should get regular DD/DTS for your amp to decode. If you are connected by HDMI, then you probably want to choose multichannel PCM (if bitstream isn't working).

I'm hooked up with optical. Tried every combo imaginable, and nothing doing. The only 5.1 option on the disc menu is "24 bit / 96 Khz Un-compressed. The player shows it as "LPCM Multi 96k". I've never seen this option before...

I would think LPCM Multi 96k should give you surround. Does it sound like surround?
But normally, blu-ray audio is meant to be played out through the HDMI to a surround receiver that does DD TruHD or DTS-MA HD
I'm quite interested in getting myself a that disk.

the receiver won't give me any surround options at all, and the display only shows "2 speakers" - however, the background music for the menu in in 5.1 ! I'm glad I only borrowed this disc, as forking out the $ 120.00 to find out I probably need a new receiver would not have made me happy..

When playing the BD, press the "audio" (or similar) button on the BD player remote repeatedly to cycle through the various audio tracks. The default may not give you surround sound since you're not connected via HDMI. Or, when at the main menu, chose the appropriate track for your equipment... If you are getting DD5.1 signal to the AVR with the "intro", then there shouldn't be a problem with your settings, which should be "bitstream". What is the default track on the BD?

Optical does not support more than 2-channel PCM. The only way to get multichannel sound through optical is by using DTS or DD. If there is no DTS or DD track, then you are likely out of luck.

To get multichannel PCM (LPCM), you must use HDMI or multichannel analog (6 or 8 wires -- side question: do any players support 8-wire 7.1 analog?).

EDIT: According to this:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Pink-F...Blu-ray/23976/
the only options on that disk are PCM 2.0, 4.0 and 5.1. So not DTS or DD options.

Question

Haha I was thinking the same. How does it sound? And this isn't available as a "standalone" blu ray correct? It comes as a one hundred and something dollar extravaganza?

well to be honest, I haven't listened to it yet. The right "enhancement", and a very quiet house are a fundamental requirement for me to spin this one. This isn't so easy with a 13 year old around.... gnome 'sain ?

Yes this is not available as a stand-alone. It's packaged in an LP size box with accompanying swag and program - along with other "outakes" and such You'd think George Lucas was behind it. I would be happy with just the 5.1 on a dvd.

Default WYWH now also issued on SACD

Wish You Were Here has just(Jan 12) been also issued on SACD(SuperAudio CD), although it's already sold out at most online retailers(I've ordered mine at a relative cheap $34 at Amazon.ca, but will have to wait at least a month until it gets re-stocked). Otherwise you can snag it on eBay for about $50 or so.
I know, many think that SACD is a dead format, but there is a trickle of new titles coming out, and besides - the hardware to take advantage of the format is out there. There are several universal players out there:
Oppo players, Cambridge Audio and Denon come to mind.
And some upper-end Sony and Yamaha BD players also play SACD.
If yours does - check it out.
All the reviewers and actual listeners are raving about this SACD.

I am interested/intrigued in this SACD but how do I know if any of my devices play this format?

Hmmm I checked my PS3 and i say a SACD label on the side.....does this mean i can play SACD? Do I need to change settings in PS3?

The original PS3s could play SACDs. Later versions (the ones with only 2 USB ports) do not.

I think mine will play SACD since I see the symbol on the side of the console.

I ordered one via elusive but I got an email saying shipping wasnt free for first time orders BUT I beg to differ. Their site says the shipping will be deducted for intl orders.

I am awaiting a reply from them.
