Here in Brampton [Rogers-owned] SN1 is in Free Preview until Dec. 31.

Perhaps that is their excuse for Rogers to simsub?

I don't watch baseball, or SN1, so I can't say what Rogers is doing with it here.

Having said that, I do sympathize as I have had my own frustrations with Rogers and their inferior simsubs on [Rogers-owned] OMNI.

Default Program Substitution on PVR

I set up my 8300HD PVR to record a show on CBS-HD West (Seattle) at 1:00AM Fridays. This worked fine for years. What I now get is a 7:00PM Thursday, CTV-Atlantic, low-def recording. My record schedule doesn't change, just the resulting recording. Why is this happening?

Rogers may have mapped the channel incorrectly, or the firmware may have become corrupted. Do a reboot and reschedule the programme. Simsubs have been discussed extensively on this forum, but I'm not sure that's the issue in this particular incident.

Check to make sure that you're getting the proper channel during other times of the week. I just checked and I'm getting KIRO on 528. If it happens after the reboot/reschedule, please provide additional information - channel numbers, what the programme is, etc.

I record the Seattle HD channels a fair bit and only get a simsub if it's a major event like Super Bowl, Academy Awards, etc.

Default For anyone watching ABC-Buffalo on Rogers

What the hell just happened to the basketball game?

Their was a minute left and they went to commercial and NOW CHEERS IS ON

yes the 1980's sitcom

11:37: This is interesting. CH JUST HIJACKED THE FEED when they're not even the one's broadcasting the game, swear to god.

11:39: Game is back. That was a new standard for simsubbing failure.

I wasn't watching but it would not have been CHCH 'hijacking' anything. It would be a mistake at Rogers. Probably a pre-planned simsub that was just forgotten about.

Extremely common for basketball games, especially the college ones on CBS in which golf follows and Global/Your provider hijacks it with only a couple minutes left.

Thankfully last night wasnt a close game, but still shouldnt happen, but unfortunately will continue to happen..

Just once I would love it to happen to a cbc HNIC, then maybe something will be done... but nothing simsubs over cbc.

Actually, while this is very rare, I recall earlier in the NHL playoffs when CBC had difficulty with their telecast that they jumped to the NBC broadcast (it even had some Rogers channel/show info graphics showup, which shocked me, because they were older ones, and I have an 8300HD box, which gives me newer ones of course). Eventually they jumped back to CBC's broadcast when they got things working again, but it shocked the heck out of me. Wish I had PVRed and uploaded it, as when things were breaking down, they were really scrambling to make sure the hockey broadcast was on in some way.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing but I was watching OTA, so it was on CBC's end.

I've seen the same thing with many live programs. The Canadian networks must often have access to two versions of the feeds or they run the feed through some system that allows them to add things like their logos on top. If something goes wrong the the one feed they'll switch to the other.

Actually I think it is the other way around. Canadian broadcast rules generally allow less commercial time than the US. That is how the McKenzie Brothers (aka The Great White North) came into existence. SCTV needed two more minutes that would only appear on the Canadian version of the show - so they decided to do some "real" Canadian content.

The CBC network heads asked the show's producers to add specifically and identifiably Canadian content for those two minutes. Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas thought that this was a ridiculous request, since the show had been taped in Canada, with a mostly Canadian cast and crew, for two years.[2] The request inspired them to create a parody that would incorporate every aspect of the humorous stereotype of Canadians.[3]

The segments were videotaped at the end of a day's shooting, with just Thomas and Moranis and a single camera operator. The sketches were for the most part improvised on the set, after which they would select the best ones for use on the program.[4]
Canadian channels will often try to overdub US show promos and/or "sponsorship messages" which may make it look like they are adding additional commercials.

Yeah, I noticed that too near the end of the game and was bothered by it but I switched to TSN (which didn't have that problem) for the rest of the broadcast. I'm not sure exactly who was to blame but the timing for it was pretty lousy, to say the least.

Canadian channels carrying any sporting event that is also carried by a US net will have the US net feed available in house for alternate angles and other material for use in their highlights package of the game. They also consider it a backup in case their own production or circuits have an issue. From the sounds of the CBC troubles mentioned earlier, something went wrong with CBC's own coverage and they were forced to use the NBC material. If the trouble lasts for an extended period I have seen them use a phone line from the venue for the Canadian commentary and use the US net for the video.

Default CBLT still simsubbing on CHEX CH 129

Since CBLN, went dark July 31, how come CBLT TORONTO is still being simsubbed over ch12 Rogers digital cable 129, here in london? Shouldn't the simsub rights be over?

Technically the simsub right is disabled. However a broadcaster can still ask a BDU for simsub rights and the BDU can still grant it. Its just not mandatory, its optional. Case in point on Rogers, Sportsnet which has no simsub rights at all, will sometimes simsub when baseball is on over FOX. Over on Bell TV, the same happens with TSN and Football.

o.k but Sportsnet is owned by Rogers...and they're a BDU as well. They wouldn't need to ask permission for themselves, to simsub over FOX. But CBC, shuts down london transmitter, and can still get simsub rights from Toronto? That is not right! Why doesn't CTV Kitchener simsub over CTV toronto? ch 108, I think.
