Hi all,
First post! Apologies if this is the wrong sub-forum, but I believe it to be a Rogers-only issue. I am a Rogers hd customer in the Ottawa area. Has anyone else noticed that the US broadcasters' HD content (I noticed it on NBC and CBS, but I believe it affects all the channels) has been replaced with the equivalent Canadian broadcaster's signals? I used to get the actual NBC broadcasts for their Thursday-night lineup (The Office, Parks and Rec, etc.), but as of a few weeks ago, City-TV is overwriting it. Ditto for CTV and CBS. The same shows are shown; however, the timing and commercials are different. I would not really care; however, the Canadian broadcasts seem to cut-in and cut-out early/late - you get the end of a show, then a quick editing cut, and suddenly you are watching the same bit again; only with the original network's logo. It is causing us an issue in our PVR recording. I really enjoyed the actual broadcasts I was getting - does anyone know why this changed? Any news items? I suppose this means I am stuck with CTV's broadcast of the Super Bowl this year? Can't wait for the Canadian tire logo to be stuck on everything. :/ |

Now that all Ottawa broadcasters are broadcasting HD over the air, the usual simultaneous substitution rules that applied to SD channels apply to HD channels as well.

Ah - I see. Thanks for the quick reply. Sucks that I now have to put up with the sloppy editing.
Thanks again, |

Simsubs have been discussed extensively on this forum - do a search and you'll find plenty of previous threads. Part of the reason this is happening more is because many local channels are now HD after the OTA switch from Analogue to Digital in the fall and the provider is asked by these channels to simsub over the US channel.

This is why, when recording American shows, I try to record from the Seattle stations. They are not normally simsubbed in this area, with exceptions for stuff like live sports. Canadian broadcaster have, for many years, stuck in an extra commercial or two and cut some of the show to do it.

I get around this by recording the american shows on the US networks at the "later time" - using timeshifting.
Usually the simsub programming (where they "over-write" the US broadcast with the canadian version for the sake of ensuring the commercials are all canadian) - only happens during the "prime time" airing of the show. If you record the later version - on the US channels you'll get the actual US broadcast - since no local Canadian network is showing it at that time. I have had to do this for Fringe (9pm EST) on FOX - since at the end of each episode, they show you a preview of what the next episode will be about. Well, the "over-written" canadian version never showed that at the end - they either cut it out entirely or ended the show a bit earlier. Very frustrating. So I changed my recording to the 11pm EST broadcast of that episode (on a western FOX channel) and I get the actual US show - (complete with ending and NO canadian commercials dubbed in). Hope this works for your situation too. |

No idea whats going on here, but ctvs the big bang theory is now being shown on peachtree.
ahh, i see, peachtree is usually the big bang, but its braves-rays tonight. nice... another screw up. (fairly new for peachtree to be simsubbed? dont think ive seen it before) (wheres the normal simsub thread? probably could go in there, or maybe in sports thread?). this is on Rogers, but I assume its 'nationwide' as ctv is actually a bell station. |

Simsubs are done by the service provider and each provider may do it differently, or not do it at all depending on the provider. I've merged your thread into this existing one since you're with Rogers.

peachtree is not HD content though, but if its better suited here, thats fine.
and its still going, I assume it will be a full 30 minute error.. Cant wait for the crtc explanation though.. whoops, sometimes there are mistakes... yeah.. whatever. Too bad no accountability. (if jays werent on SN1, wouldnt even notice, only sports on right now on analog tv) edit, fixed, so a 23 minute error. still not accepatble. |

Sorry, didn't realize it was not HD. I've changed the thread title so that any simsub can be discussed here. SD simsubs have been going on for so long you'd think they'd be getting those right by now. Most of the recent complaints have been regarding HD.

This wasn't a simsub error, CTV was on the ball as always. This was a baseball episode of The Big Bang Theory:
"Sheldon Cooper at the plate now. He seems to be talking to himself, let's see what he has to say: 'The pitcher seems to be throwing a curve ball this time around, with the ball rotating away from me at 3.48 feet / sec. I'll widen my stance to 2.59 feet, and swing my bat at a speed of 98.31 mph. This will allow me to connect within 4.32 seconds of the pitch being released, and I'll loop the ball in between the center and right fielder 298.32 feet away.' Well there you go folks, straight from Sheldon's head." |

How is SN1 allowed to simsub over Fox (they are doing it right now for the Phi/Bos baseball game), when I dont even get the channel? Is that allowed?
This is on analog Rogers in SWO, SN1 is a digital only channel. (again maybe moved to Rogers forum??) (and yes, too many simsub thread lately...) |

Is it possible to have Bell without TSN though?
This is a channel thats not available on my TV thats doing the simsub. (and from what I watched of the baseball, they screwed up the simsub as well, 4x3 framing the 16x9 FOX Broadcast in a couple of the innings.. so it wasnt even a correct simsub..) I have fired (another) complaint to the CRTC, lets see if they even answer. |
