I have a digital Rogers box 4642HD (not PVR) and connected it (USB), to an external hard drive to record one program while watching another. I unplugged everything, then plugged in the hard drive to power source and USB and turned it on, then plugged in the Rogers box to reboot from scratch. The Rogers box doesn't give me a menu to record and doesn't know the hard drive exists. Any ideas please? Thanks.

The Rogers STBs do not allow eHDD functionality. You need a PVR, which use SATA connections. There are a couple of stickies in the Rogers PVR forum here (8642, 8300) regarding this. It's always a good idea to check these things out before purchasing. Even the PVRs require very specific eHDD/enclosure combinations.

A friend has said it could be done, but no problem, I can use the hard drive to back up my computer. Very nice of you to reply so quickly.

Your friend was probably referring to Bell, which allows their non PVR STB (At least the recent ones) to hook up a USB drive to turn it into a PVR. On Rogers, it's not possible as 57 stated.
