Port 4 must be plugged into a *LAN* port.

That worked, thanks! Now, another quick question. Seems I ran into an issue others have run into, but I'm not quite so patient. When trying to get an IP on the Asus I was unable to when releasing the lease on the ActionTec. So I statically assigned the IP that was being leased to the ActionTec and manually assigned my DNS. So I'm wondering once the two hours is up will I lose my connection, or is it safe to wait until I go to bed tonight to change back to the automatic IP assignment?

It's really not a good idea to statically assign the IP address... if the DHCP server hands that address out to someone else stuff might break.

I received my Asus yesterday and was up in running in about 10 minutes. My internet speeds seem to have increased, but the TV seems about the same. I have to use the Actiontec to connect the TV's as I only have coax connections.
One problem I do have though, is my WDTV. I can get the video to play, but it stutters a little now and I cannot get audio. Any ideas what may have happened with this? Thanks!! |

Without knowing how it is connected and what you are doing with it... who knows.

Hi File,
Thanks for the work on this firmware! I'll make sure to send a donation! As for the WDTV - it is connected exactly the same as it was with the Actiontec. It connects wireless to the router and streams from my server. THe AppleTV's that I have continue to work fine, but for whatever reason, the WDTV is acting up. I'll fool around with it some more and see what I can figure out. One other thing - how can I assign static IP's with names to my devices? I have a couple of Apple TV's that appear in my client list with their IP, but I cannot figure out how to add them to the static list and call them ATV1 and ATV2 for example. |

I'm not sure about naming, but you can assign an IP based on the MAC addresses of the devices. Goto Advanced Settings -> DHCP Server and then down at the bottom Enable Manual Assigment and add the MAC addresses with the IPs you would like to give them.

I see asus announced the rt-ac66u. I wonder if the firmware will be similar to the n56u?

Is it possible to convert from coax to eth myself? If it is, is it just a matter of running some cat6 to my stb (through a switch if I have multiple) or would there be something more involved required?

Nope. That is all that is required. Just run ethernet, connect to a switch or to the Asus, unplug coax on receiver, plug ethernet in. Done.

Hi file, is it possible to edit dnsmasq.conf in your firmware? I noticed you disabled SSH. I want to edit it to send certain sites through Tunlr DNS. Here is what I wanna do.
Thanks, SirReal |

I purchased the Asus router and have been able to get it to work as a replacement for my Actiontec in regular mode, however I cannot get passthrough mode to work. I'm plugged into port 3 on the Asus, and cloned the MAC address from the Actiontec. Tried this on my linux based firewall, my MacBook and a Windows XP machine. On each I cloned the MAC address first and none have I been able to get an IP address.
Is there something else I need to configure on the ASUS? All I've done so far is upload your firmware and set the ISP to Bell Aliant Passthrough. I even bought a 2nd Asus thinking the 1st one could be defective. Same on the 2nd unit. |

Nope, should work. Same switching insanity applies though. You must release the IP address on whatever device you are moving from. If not 2 hours you will be waiting before you magically get an IP address.

I left it all night last night and still no IP this morning, or all day today. I even tried your older firmware's. No go in passthrough mode.

I put it in during the first development and tried it then, haven't used it since. It's possible it was broken. I'll see if I can test it in the next week or two. Busy busy busy.
