Default Unable to connect Xbox 360S to home theater projector

Hi there
I have the following:

Xbox 360 S - using composite cables
receiver 1: yamaha htr-5930 (older)
receiver 2: pioneer vsx - 921 - k (bought this today)
ceiling mounted projector - Infocus ScreenPlay 4805 (old projector)
old samsung dvd/vhs player

before i bought the new pioneer receiver i tried hooking the xbox up to the old yamaha receiver using composite cables

the projector was hooked up to the reciever using component cables (since it is an older projector there was no HDMI back them)

the old samsung dvd/vhs is hooked up via component cables and works fine with both receivers

i am unable to get the xbox 360 to work with either receiver.. i bought the new receiver today thinking that it was the old receiver that was the issue.. now i am thinking it is the projecctor.

the projector has both 16:9 and 4:9 aspect ratio

i have zero knowledge when it comes to projectors.. this projector came with the house and i have never had one before... when i connect the xbox to the receiver and select the input that the xbox is connected to the screen goes black and continously says "searching..."

the old samsung dvd player plays dvds well so that tells me that the connection to either receiver, old or new, and the projector is working fine

with the old receiver i was able to fiddle around with the settings and i could hear the xbox console when i moved the joystick around but i was unable to retrieve an image

can someone give me some advice?

i am thinking i should just buy an hdmi projector such that everything connects well via hdmi without all of these hassles...

i just want to watch movies and play videogames in my home theatre! thanks

When you mentioned you hooked up the XBox to the receiver using composite cables, did you then run composite cables from the receiver to the projector?

If everything was HDMI, there's a possibility that you could run any type of cable to the receiver and have it output HDMI (though you'd have to check if your receiver supports this), but AFAIK receivers can't do the same via component outputs

Thank you for replying

I only had composite cables from the xbox to the receiver

the receiver is connected to the projector using component

so you are saying that if i connect the xbox to the receiver using composite it will never work bc the receiver is connected to the projector using component?

as an aside I did hook the xbox up to the projector directly using composite and the xbox worked.. the image was terrible probably because it is an old projector and the audio was terrible (no surround sound bc the audio was coming from the projector)

I read the user manual for the Pioneer, and it should be able to transcode composite into component. So your issue might be one of the following:

1. Resolution of the receiver is set too high for the projector. Component cables can not take 1080p, so try setting your receiver to output 1080i or 720p. The InFocus 4805 is a native 854x480 projector, but it will take 720p and 1080i inputs.

2. The manual for the Pioneer indicates "If several video components are assigned to the same input function, the converter gives priority to HDMI, component, then composite (in that order)". So maybe you have your xbox plugged into say INPUT 1, while also having some other AV gear connected to INPUT 1. Try plugging your xbox into an input with nothing else on it.

By the way, the InFocus screenplay can accept an HDMI input. On the back it has a proprietary connector called M1 port. You can buy M1 to HDMI cables:

You'll need to check if this AVR transcodes (upconverts) composite video to component video. There should be a table or mention of this feature somewhere in the operating manual. It transcodes to HDMI, but whether it does to component, you'll have to check.

Here's the FAQ on AVR features - always best to buy what you need. Doesn't the X-box have component video output capability?

I was assuming it will transcode to component, since it features a DVDO video processing chip. But at the price point of the receiver, maybe it only does this for digital output. The manual isn't clear on this.

I forgot to also suggest the xbox component cables. If you've lost these, you can buy replacement component cables at any store for about $30.

The cheapest solution though might be the M1 to HDMI adaptor. That runs under $5 US from that blacklisted retailer. Of course you'd have shipping and duties (potentially) on top of that.

I agree that if the FP has HDMI capability, then get the M1/HDMI. However, you should also get the component video output for the XBox (if it doesn't have the most recent HDMI - I'm not familiar with all of the XBOX variations). The component video connection will provide a far superior picture to composite, provided all devices have their settings properly optimized.

I'm assuming your XBOX doesn't have HDMI, however, if it does, that is the obvious solution.

The Xbox does have HDMI.

The problem is I am going to have to run HDMI cables through the drywall and there are 2 90 degree turns to make. Currently the component cable runs through the drywall so I figure I will tape the HDMI to the component and pull the component through and the HDMI will follow. However, something tells me that it won't be that straightforward.

Got any tips?

Connect 2 or three pieces of heavy string or light rope to the component cable and pull that back out. Then use one of the strings to pull the HDMI and Component cable back in. And leave the extra strings in place for pulling future cables.
