The 7 billionth person will be welcomed to the world on Monday, according to the United Nations, marking a significant moment for earth’s population, which continues to grow at an exponential pace.

Just 12 years ago, the earth was home to 6 billion people, according to the United Nations, and back in the 1960s, the earth’s population measured only half that number — 3 billion.

And in the time of our founding fathers, there were just 1 billion inhabitants on earth.

I'm not sure this is the case any more. A recent article in the Economist (and the graph on the BBC site) indicate that it will take longer to get to 8 billion (14 years) than it did to get from 6 to 7 (12 years). 5 to 6 billion was also a similar 12 years. This means we no longer have exponential growth and are near/past the inflection point.

Read that article too. I have also ready that, based on current demographic projections, the worlds population will actually peak in 2050 and then decline so we are well past "exponential" growth.

Hey I was the 3,172,943,847 person born since history began according to the calculator.

My son was the 6,048,473,070. That means almost as many people were born between the time I was born and my son was born as were born in the entire history of humans up until my birth.

My life expectancy is 78.2 years.
His life expectancy is 80.5 years.

Very interesting!

Calculator obviously doen't round to the appropriate number of significant digits, but then again, they don't know what exponential means either.

Again, not really. There are published (average) life expectancy numbers (typically at birth), however, once you age, the expectancy numbers go up. For example, someone who has already reached 50 years of age has a higher life expectancy than at birth. This is obvious because he's already passed all those others who died between 0-50. It's also obvious since someone who's 81 years old doesn't have a negative life expectancy - he probably has an expectancy of about age 90...

Although these sorts of "facts" are "interesting" as Hugh says, they should be better explained so that people don't misinterpret them.

57, I simply did not say it clearly. Instead of saying

Quote:
My life expectancy is 78.2 years.
His life expectancy is 80.5 years.
I should have said

Quote:
My life expectancy at birth was 78.2 years.
His life expectancy at birth was 80.5 years.

Interestingly, the Life Expectancy Tool on the Canadian Business site calculates my life expectancy now as 79.16 years

Of all the people alive today (the 7 Billion or so), you were the 3,172,943,847th person born - not since the beginning of time.

Sorry I edited my post and I cut and pasted it (and jumbled that up) but yes you are correct. I was about the 76th billion in terms of history.

I was number 2.424 Billion. In my opinion that population of about 2.5 billion would be about right for the planet for everyone to have a decent standard of living and there to be enough living space , food, energy to not need to have wars.
