Hmmm...newsflash for ya there, young feller: not everyone has a smartphone! Especially not my mother-in-law!

But thanks for your contribution

What? She doesn't? Mine does, although it's a corporate iPhone. And yesterday after church service (I don't go regularly), I saw a lot of "older" people on their smartphones as well, so please get this notion out of your head that smartphones are only for younger people.

I'm mad at myself for buying a golf GPS a few years ago, because an app for that is available for free now too. But the GPS signal should be everywhere, because it uses satellites to track things just like in GPS-only devices, and not cellular towers.

The GPS signal is everywhere, but unless you buy an app with offline maps, the map data is only available when you have a 3G data connection.

Cooper asked for a basic GPS unit for his non-technical minded MIL. Let's keep it simple folk and address HIS needs. You buy it, plug it in and go.

I was given a Garmin 265WT almost 2 years ago,and it's working great.I don't use it much,it's ready to go when I need it. I signed up for a lifetime update (about $90 a go ago.. ) , and just did an update yesterday. It took about 2 hours to update.

FYI I discovered Garmin has an app for Mac that will let you know when an update comes out.

I have an Iphone, and the maps are great. But the voice commands and display of the GPS are a lot easier and safer to use while driving.
Plus it has the bluetooth hands-free feature if you need it.

Cooper83, have you made your purchase yet? If not, there is a Saturday only sale at Staples (at least here in La Belle Province) with a good price on the Garmin 1350T.

The Garmin 1350T only includes Lifetime Traffic. Lifetime Maps is much more important than traffic. Look for model numbers with 'M' or 'LM', 'LMT' in them. If they only have 'T' or 'LT' then they are Lifetime Traffic only.

I'm looking at getting an eTrex 20 mainly for geocaching but also for car use.
It's a new unit out last month that also picks up the new Russian GLONASS system.

I have a Samsung galaxy S Vibrant and the GPS in it is not that great.

I always buy refurbished TomTom models. usually I pay less than $100. I travel alot with work and I have to rent cars so i leave a GPS in my suitcase and I have one in each car. I have also been upgrading from 3 1/2" to 5" models.

I have been very satisfied with each of my TomTom models. For the few times that I have needed help from customer service they have been very quick, friendly and helpful.
