Now they are giving basic+ people a free Digital Adapter
Mu understanding is that the DTA only works on channels that replace existing analog channels. If a channel wasn't on analog, you won't get it with a DTA. On the other hand, a regular SD STB can receive any SD channel on the cable.

BTW, when I started with digital service, I was able to get several channels that were not available on analog. My bill was less too.

Yea I would like to see it to. I made a passing remark to my grandmother the other day about the death of analog on Rogers and she almost lost her mind when she realized she won't be able to tune to certain stations she gets now.

As requested. I'm in the the Markham area.

Note: the text does not indicate whether any analog channels will be available other than "some of your existing TV channels".

The letter contradicts itself. It says Rogers is going "all digital" implying no analogue channels at all then it goes on to say TV's connected directly to the cable will no longer be able to get some of the channels you get now implying you will get some channels just not all of them. Both statements can not be true. Once again the marketing people and the technical people aren't taking to each other. We'll have to wait and see what they actually do.

The letter means at certain stages of the transition you will loose certain channels in a certain tier range. I would assume and speculate that this essentially means that Rogers will completely turn off analog at a later date (Perhaps 2013?)

P.S. @Ericball----> Thanks for uploading the letter, much appreciated!

Consider that Rogers doesn't even offer an analog package. Thus the only reason they would maintain any analog channels is if the cost of giving DTAs to subscribers with grandfathered analog packages in the region is more than the cost of running the analog equipment for the region.

I requested one of the dta's online in my account about a month ago and still haven't received it. It said it would take 3-5 business days, but it seems they either lost the order or won't send it until analog actually shuts off.

Hopefully they don't charge me for unreturned equipment that they never sent.

Coolio, I would call and find out. Don't take the chance it was delivered to someone else.

I ordered a digital adapter online and a Purorlator driver delivered it a few days later. I had to sign for it. I'd check and see if there is any record of your order. You don't want to get charged for something you never received.

My adapters were just left at the front door, and they are so basic, the remotes are flimsy, not sturdy at all. If someone drops one, it will probably smash to bits.

Also, you can't attach a VCR or DVD player to them, as far as I can tell. Can anybody tell me if it's possible to attach them to a VCR or DVD player, and I'm just missing it?

It is possible to connect it to a VCR or DVD recorder. All thats needed to be done is to connect cable from cable outlet to DTA, from DTA to VCR from VCR then to TV, only thing that isn't too good is the fact that you have to change channels on the DTA before you record unless you have a VCR that has a IR sensor that will automatically change the channel for you on the DTA, but since most VCR's where made before the DTA was made I doubt at this point that you could even program it to work.

Option two is to split the cable out into two and have the DTA have one portion of the cable and the other to the VCR until analog is officially shut off

The DTA can be used as mentioned by m3repair, however, it's pretty kludgy since you have to change channels on the DTA and leave it on that channel, tuning the VCR to channel 3. Suggest you consider a STB for the VCR or DVD Recorder. Here's the FAQ on how to connect STB or DTA, as discussed previously in this thread. Using the DTA with a VCR is also discussed briefly in the Rogers FAQ link in post 1 of this thread:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=76077 VCR/DVD Recorder hookup FAQ

You can also split the signal upstream and only record the remaining analogue channels (also discussed in the FAQ above and in the post above)

Here's a post useful for those new to the forum - FAQs, Search Tips, Optimization, etc:

I have a question for any forum members who have made the switch to the Digital Adapter but had it done through a Technician. Did any of you try plugging in a television back into cable without the Digital Adapter and find out that half of the channels are missing as if a filter was put into a place. I ask as I went to a friends apartment and he was asking how could it be that analog had been already shut off when someone else in the floor above had everything analog still. Is the new procedure to also put a filter in as well install the Digital Adapter the new practice to prevent any further TV's from being connected or was this a one off?

It doesn't make any sense to install a filter to block analog channels, since one would presume the intent is to be able to replace those analog channels with digital QAM channels. And the purpose of the DTA is to be able to switch your service without a truck roll to add or remove filters.

Which channels was your friend missing?
