I have the SMCD3GN-RRR (RRR may be a Rogers-specific Model name, because the model number is SMCD3GN. It has the Rogers logo and name on top.) I believe this can be G or N and I believe it's $7/mo, but I'm not positive. (It's the one that's shown on the Rogers website for $7/mo and $199, but that purchase price is incorrect - as stated before, you can purchase it for $149 (it's long, black with a silver band in the middle where it says SMC Networks). I was not considering the "G" model)
http://www.rogers.com/web/link/hispe...owDefaultPlans The 3825 is much shorter and "thicker". Here's a pdf link for the Rogers SMCD3GN Modem: http://www.smc.com/files/AJ/SMCD3GN-...ual_Rogers.pdf From the specs: Quote:

Purchase price for both the Cisco and SMC gateways is $149. Cisco ones are not retail packaged so if you choose to buy one it will come out of the rental pool and the charge is billed to your account.
The pricing on the website is based on the assumption that you don't have Rogers internet at the moment and you want to sign up thus a $49.99 installation fee is factored into the purchase price you see on the internet. Also nobody should be purchasing the SMC G gateway. Horrible piece of equipment and all internet tiers including the Lite package now require a D3 modem. |

So if I were to take my old Motorola SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0 modem and ask to switch to the DOCSIS 3.0 modem (assuming I will get the Cisco one because I will be renting it), Rogers will adjust the bill to $7 instead of the current $4 for the DOCSIS 2.0 modem?

Yes, that sounds about right.

That, plus any increase in moving from Express to Extreme
Per post # 58, Express - grandfathered, on a D2 modem, gets you 10 Mbps, 60 GB cap Express - current offering, on a D3 modem, gets you 18 Mbps, 70 GB cap Extreme - current offering, on a D3 modem, gets you 28 Mbps, 120 GB cap

Your missing the Old Extreme on that list. D2 mode, got you either 10 or 15mbps with your D2 modem at a 95GB cap. The cost of the tier is the same, just an increased modem price but if Rogers is giving you a free modem rental, then it doesn't matter.

My current setup is
- an old purchased Motorola SB5101 DOCSIS2 modem - grandfathered Express plan - my own wired/wireless router My intent it to "simply" repalce the modem with a new purchased SMCD3GN-RRR at $149 at the Rogers store. Questions 1) PLAN - I know many keep thier Express plan with the DOCSIS3 modem. Does the same apply with my grandfathered express plan? I really dont want to have to deal with touching my plan if at all possible. Would be quite happy with a modest increase in speed that the change in modem alone would offer. (per bullets a few posts up) 2) BRIDGE MODE - As I will need BRIDGE mode, is that somethign I can get setup in advance when I pick the modem up at a Rogers sore...or is it something I must call in (1-888-764-3771) once I remove my old modem and connect the new one? I assume it must be phoend in, after purchase, as the modem is new, sealed in the box. 3) PRIOR TO BRIDGE MODE - If they take forever to get me into BRIDGE mode, with my internet access still work?

1. Plan stays, no problem.
2. Can only do once you get home. Takes no time at all once you're talking to a technician. 3. Won't take any time, but you can connect directly from the computer "in the meantime." My technician asked me to connect this way first to ensure it was operating properly before he put it in Bridge. 4. I believe you can also do it yourself, however, it's so quick to call and have them do it, that's what I did.

Everytime, and I mean EVERY time I touch my plan its ALWAYS an issue, that usually takes 6 months to resolve. For example, I instantly lose all my ongoing promotions and discounts, because "you changed your plan". Not to mention the impact of change in plan will have on my TV channel line up! There is only so much stress and havoc I can handle ( sidebar - 8642 did me in). Also, in this case, I dont even know, and they wont even know, what I am asking for. For example, rather that asking for a service to be added or removed, what do I ask for? "Hi, just got a new modem and I would like to be taken off my grandfathered plan"?? You know what will happen - they will insist on speaking to my grandfather I will likely need to wait this out for at least a year, unless there is something you know that I dont in terms of "how" to touch the plan without totally messing it up. Has anyone here successfuly migrated off a "grandfathered" cable/internet plan, onto a 'market' plan, with relative ease and with only minor impact on program changes and prices???

I don't really see any change of plan at all. You are still on Express, only with higher speed and higher download cap, related to the purchase of the modem. There should be no changes on your bill. Give them a call.

switching your internet plan has no impact on your TV packages.
I think you are getting confused with stuff that goes on in the wireless side where credits and discounts can fall off if you change your plan. Residential service operate on an entirely different billing system that doesn't exhibit the same behaviour. |
