After weeks, Rogers finally removed the 10Mbps cap from my SB6120 modem. I don't know how or why ... I can now get 25Mbps down on Extreme with this modem -- during off-peak times.

However, the real problem is that often during peak times, I can barely get a little over 1 Mbps down speed due to congestion.

I'm wondering whether the time has come to give up on Rogers.

lucretius. There should be no reason for that sort of slowdown. I consistently get my advertized 10 Mbps Express service - with 20+ Mbps speedboost at all times of day or night. Are you connected wired or wirelessly? If you have a direct connection, you should call Rogers when you encounter the problems.

Congestion with cable should really be a thing of the past since many individuals are signed up for very fast service.

Edit - note that there have been some recent reports in the forum regarding internet problems on Rogers. I don't know if that's the issue here.

Could you tell us which store sells Cisco N gateway model 3825? I checked with Rogers Plus on Adelaide, downtown Toronto and they only rent it. Confirmed with Rogers that this modem is not for sale as the rented ones are refurbished.

Sannathan - you are technically correct from what I understand. The fella at my Rogers + store was very helpful however. What we started to do was purchase the SMC modem, then exchange it for the Cisco. Seems that they are available for exchanges but technically not for sale.

Now that said, when the manager came out, she typed in some code which allowed e to purchase the Cisco modem directly.

So, I guess maybe try another day / another store and try to get someone more helpful.....hope this helps.

My Rogers Plus store guy was very candid and said that the Cisco modems are refurbished and that is why they are only for rent. I called Rogers from the store and they spoke with the store manager. They too confirmed that the Cisco 3825 N Gateway is not for sale.

I will try another store.

My Cisco modem was brand new - in the original packaging. It has worked as advertised as well consistently since I installed it about three or four weeks ago now.

Mine too was "brand new" in original packing but the Rogers + guy who is a friend warned that these are refurbished similar to what the Rogers technicians deliver at home. He said they work fine but why pay 150 + tax for refurbished.

Mine was also brand new. In fact it was manufactured in August of this year. I don't think these have been around long enough to be refurbished.

Sannathan - it sure sounds like you friend is referring to the SMC modems vice the new Cisco ones. My Cisco modem has an 07/11 build date.....and was sealed in the box with all accessories etc......typically with a refurb from Rogers all you get is the unit from my experience.

Perhaps there was some confusion?

These are actually Scientific Atlanta models and have been there for long. SA was bought over by Cisco and there are complaints that Cisco does not stand by this product. The build date is the refurbished date.
Rogers tech does bring a original package and opens it in our home. Rogers does not sell this for that reason is what my friend said.

I just don't know about that. It clearly says Date of mfg: 08/11. It is definitely brand new, not a scratch on it. And I bought mine at a Rogers Plus store.

Our south Florida condo is served by Comcast. They said I could buy a Docsis 3 (or maybe 2) running at 1200 or 1700.

Does that sound like I can buy a modem suitable for Rogers up here and use it down there?

Comcast charges are all over the map, depending on who you talk to on what day. Roughly $35 with no contract for 11-15 MB. They rent the modem for around $8.

Canada Computers on College Street at Augusta in Toronto asks about $80 for a DOCSIS 2 they currently stock - or so I was told on the phone yesterday.

Thanks.

Any guidance appreciated.

Ben

I've just noticed there's a Thompson DCM475 available at Canada Computers. Has anyone tried one of those?

I just called Rogers to ask if they have just a DOCSIS cable-modem option (instead of having to rent/buy their SMC WirelessRouter/Cablemodem device)

I was told "no" - that's all they have to offer if you want the new versions of Extreme and Extreme Plus, etc.

She told me that she'd log my call and add my suggestion/complaint to the list - as they do review these things.

In addition, I also emailed Rogers about this same issue.

I like my own home wireless router and intend to keep it.
All I need is a new D3 cable modem, not another router/modem - which is very expensive.
I sure hope enough of us voice our concerns so that Rogers listens and gets an agreement with someone to provide D3 modems as an option.

Last week I bought a Motorola SB6120 DOCSIS 3 modem from TigerDirect. It's now working on Rogers. When you set it up, you have to speak to "cable fulfillment" to get it added to your account. That modem is much cheaper than what Rogers wants for the router models.
