I bought a 750gb hard drive for my older laptop. I used EaseUs backup and cloned my old drive onto an EHD. Next I installed new hard drive and immediately ran bootable CD and copied everything onto newly installed drive. Laptop fires up perfectly however, it only shows a 135 gb hard drive(not the 750 installed).
I think I should have formatted and partitioned drive before install( I think). I have tried to delete everything from new drive and start over but it wont let me What should be my next step? Thanks for any help |

I thought I would be able to somehow just wipe out everything on new hard drive and start from scratch... Thanks for the reply |

The software probably just restored the original partition exactly. It can be enlarged using disk management software. Depending on the Windows version and partition type, Windows Disk Manager may have an option to do this. (Make a backup first.) It should also be possible to partition and format the rest of the drive using Windows Disk Manager.

Sounds like the backup software restored the partition from the original HD. You just need to resize it on the new HD.
Download a free program called GParted. Burn the CD and boot of the CD. Then resize your partition to include the rest of the disk. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ |

You shouldn't need additional software.
Click start and right click on My Computer then select Manage. From there click Disk Management and you should see your hard drive. Right click on the "C:" partition and select Extend Volume. See if that can help you. |

thanks for the replies. When I go into disc management it says this OS wont allow dynamic discs???
It also wont let me extend the volume, only simple volume. It does show the drive as unallocated but I cant do anything with it. Thx again |

There are a number of utilities that allow manipulation of disk partitions. Gparted is one of the best, probably the best free utility, but it can be a bit daunting to the non-technical person. EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition may be a little more user friendly.

When you say 'can't do anything', do you mean can't resize? Can you make a new parition with the unallocated space?
This protects your files in the event you need to reinstall/restore the operating system. Any files on the second partition will be untouched. I recommend to most people to never have one single partition for this very reason. 135 should be plenty for your OS + software, then you have 600 for misc files. Your choice, though. |
