The one thing about Keurig is that it takes a lot of trial and error to find K-Cups you like the best. Once you do ... then it's a pretty good system.

As for waste, that is the one thing I wish was easier to deal with. The inside contents of the K-Cups are complete compostable (grounds and filter). The shell plastic is recyclable. Only the foil top is garbage. I just wish it was a little easier to deconstruct for waste purposes.

Obviously I was comparing the pods to the t-discs and k-cups and the fact I don't drink anywhere near 12 cups a day. I realize they all come in containers, boxes envelopes or bags.

Good to know.

PS: I thought foil was recyclable.

I'm traditional but open to new ideas so I will research inverted once my AeroPress and I are reunited. I'm enjoying a week on Vancouver Island but I do miss my coffee. On the other hand I'm much less antagonistic while on vacation so that's a good thing.

We looked at the Keurig and Tassimo systems about a year and a half ago.

After reading reviews of the particular Keurig machine we were considering, we opted to go for a Tassimo machine instead.

We do not drink a lot of coffee but wasted a lot of coffee when we brewed a pot.

The Tassimo coffee selection is not as varied as the Keurig system, but we've found some coffees we like, so it's all good.

As for packaging concerns:

I save the T-cups and disassemble them for recycling.

The plastic base and foil go in the blue bin and the coffee grinds go in the green bin.

Bought our first Keurig machine slightly over a year ago and love it so much that I bought the desk mini version for my office because office coffee is aweful. I love how I can make a cup for myself in the morning without wasting a whole pot since I wake up much earlier than my wife. And we can brew ourselves a cup anytime during the day without wasting a pot. I also love the wide variety of coffees. I have about 7 boxes of different flavors at the office.

Five years ago I never heard of Keurig. Judging from the posts here it seems like Keurig has the market cornered.

Can you toss a regular tea bag into a My K-cup?

Bgclarke; are there any recycling identifiers on the T-cups? The plastic base seems to be polypropylene - which is recyclable- but there is no code I can see. I like my Tassimo also - it makes a killer expresso - which keeps me awake for 3 days, so I only use it twice a week. But I recycle and compost everything possible to minimize my garbage, so I would not buy this type of machine again; I would go for one of the Saecos, such as the Giro, that grinds beans.

Jake, with the Keurig you can just pour a cup of hot water... you just dont put a k-cup in the "hopper".... so yeah, just drop a tea bag in your cup and pour hot water...
We just got a Keurig as an anniversary gift an i love it... I would never buy tea k-cups because it seems easier and cheaper to buy a box of tea and have the machine pour me hot water.... maybe i am missing something here?

We do the same with hot chocolate. There's no point in buying them in K-cups. Just put the stuff in the cup and call for hot water.

Good point. I thought maybe it was like coffee and the temperature, pressure and time was precisely metered.

I've found that with a little bit of practice I can run a small sharp paring knife around the perimeter of the top of the K-cup. Puncture through near the edge, and run it around. Picture the kind of cut you'd get from a can-opener. That separates the foil (apart from a tiny rim) and the filter from the plastic. Dump filter and grounds into stainless compost bin, and plastic and foil go into recycling.

For my own use, I prefer fresh grounds and a My K-Cup. But for parties, it's easier to have a box of K-cups for the guests to pick through. Rinsing the filters one at a time so the next person can have coffee gets tedious otherwise... :P

No, there are no codes on them.

Our blue box program here takes pretty much any plastics and metal, so I am able to recycle all parts of the T-discs.

It is a nuisance separating the grounds from the foil top and plastic base, but it is worth it.
