The one thing about Keurig is that it takes a lot of trial and error to find K-Cups you like the best. Once you do ... then it's a pretty good system.
As for waste, that is the one thing I wish was easier to deal with. The inside contents of the K-Cups are complete compostable (grounds and filter). The shell plastic is recyclable. Only the foil top is garbage. I just wish it was a little easier to deconstruct for waste purposes. |

PS: I thought foil was recyclable.

I'm traditional but open to new ideas so I will research inverted once my AeroPress and I are reunited. I'm enjoying a week on Vancouver Island but I do miss my coffee. On the other hand I'm much less antagonistic while on vacation so that's a good thing.

We looked at the Keurig and Tassimo systems about a year and a half ago.
After reading reviews of the particular Keurig machine we were considering, we opted to go for a Tassimo machine instead. We do not drink a lot of coffee but wasted a lot of coffee when we brewed a pot. The Tassimo coffee selection is not as varied as the Keurig system, but we've found some coffees we like, so it's all good. As for packaging concerns: I save the T-cups and disassemble them for recycling. The plastic base and foil go in the blue bin and the coffee grinds go in the green bin. |

Bought our first Keurig machine slightly over a year ago and love it so much that I bought the desk mini version for my office because office coffee is aweful. I love how I can make a cup for myself in the morning without wasting a whole pot since I wake up much earlier than my wife. And we can brew ourselves a cup anytime during the day without wasting a pot. I also love the wide variety of coffees. I have about 7 boxes of different flavors at the office.

Five years ago I never heard of Keurig. Judging from the posts here it seems like Keurig has the market cornered.
Can you toss a regular tea bag into a My K-cup?

Bgclarke; are there any recycling identifiers on the T-cups? The plastic base seems to be polypropylene - which is recyclable- but there is no code I can see. I like my Tassimo also - it makes a killer expresso - which keeps me awake for 3 days, so I only use it twice a week. But I recycle and compost everything possible to minimize my garbage, so I would not buy this type of machine again; I would go for one of the Saecos, such as the Giro, that grinds beans.

We just got a Keurig as an anniversary gift an i love it... I would never buy tea k-cups because it seems easier and cheaper to buy a box of tea and have the machine pour me hot water.... maybe i am missing something here? |

We do the same with hot chocolate. There's no point in buying them in K-cups. Just put the stuff in the cup and call for hot water.

Good point. I thought maybe it was like coffee and the temperature, pressure and time was precisely metered.

For my own use, I prefer fresh grounds and a My K-Cup. But for parties, it's easier to have a box of K-cups for the guests to pick through. Rinsing the filters one at a time so the next person can have coffee gets tedious otherwise... :P |

Our blue box program here takes pretty much any plastics and metal, so I am able to recycle all parts of the T-discs. It is a nuisance separating the grounds from the foil top and plastic base, but it is worth it. |
