That security guy may be right.
But people have to be careful when they are not on their own private network. I do not do sensitive information while on smartphone or public network unless the connection is going through a VPN with extra layer of encryption. Shaw WiFi is no different than the free WiFi at MacDonald. |

I had asked about that before and not heard anything back … I presumed they didn't want to further expose security issues in order to indulge my curiosity.

In post 31 gslvanbc is mentioning wifi range of about 1/2 block.
Is that consistent with what the rest of you are finding? How many feet/meters is a 1/2 block?

The range probably depends on the hotspot. I work across the street from one Shaw wifi hotspot and I don't pick it up until I am outside of the building. Other Shaw wifi zones I have come across, I can access about 1/2 a block a way.

1/2 block eh? I guess my dream of wifi from Medicine Hat to Edmonton along HWY2 is a dream far far away.

That might be true for outdoor hotspots but the ones in local restaurants don't seem to work any more than about 30feet outside the buildings.

I have noticed that the Shaw WiFi hotspots are starting to pop up very fast now. In Calgary, the Inglewood, Kensington, Bridgeland, Marda Loop, and Mission hot spots have been greatly expanded. In additon, there is a new WiFi hotspot along 17 Ave SW from 14 ST SW to MacLeod TR SE.
I can't wait to see major regional malls, Chinook Centre, Market Mall, and SouthCentre, the entire LRT lines, and the entire Downtown covered in WiFi hotspots. |

Yes, it is great all the new hot spots popping up in Calgary. I noticed they have big chunks of blocks in Inglewood (9th ave) and along 17th Ave covered.

I too have noticed SHAW Wifi hotspots popping up in Calgary.
In my case it was at the ARC (Acadia Rec Center) I see they have a Shaw "open" and a Shaw "Secure" I just logged onto the open, but did not try the secure.. Is there a different log on required (silly I didnt try it) and what is the secure access for? |

Their "secure" network is only secure in the sense that the signal is encrypted. Anyone Shaw user with a @shaw.ca e-mail and with the appropriate password can log in.
See the FAQ on Shaw's website: http://www.shaw.ca/Internet/WiFi/ It's at the bottom of the list. |

They've been popping up all over Edmonton as well. Shaw is sending reps out to speak to businesses that have Shaw internet about setting up an access point in the business. Great idea, and it helps them expand the WiFi rollout quickly.

Was surprised to access Shaw Wifi in Sinclair Centre Food court but map for downtown Vancouver doesn't show it. Also it seems that the rollout in Vancouver in going slower than in Calgary where lots of hotspots popping up in the downtown.
What with that?? Are fewer businesses willing to partner with Shaw in providing a hotspot? |

Keep in mind that the headquarters of Shaw is also in Calgary, so there could be some biased toward the Calgary market.

A few sites are popping up in Victoria... 3 as of tonight on Shaw's Wifi map. Looks like it's expanding out of Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.

Just wandering through Kensington tonight and tested the Shaw secure WiFi. Good signal strength outdoors throughout the advertised service area, though I lost the signal once and had to manually reconnect.
No signal indoors, though. (Not a surprise, however.) |
