I have a smartphone, with a cable that links the phone's microUSB port to a regular computer USB port. I'd like to carry one around with me, but the thing is approx 4 feet long, which is a pain to carry in my pocket. 4 inches is more like what I need. As the title says, I want a SHORT microUSB-to-USB cable, preferably from a bricks-n-mortar store in the GTA.

You should check out Tiger Direct, they have stores all around the GTA, including a store in Vaughan. I check on the site, and they had a cable that as 1.5 feet long. I sure they have more in the store.

You could try Pacific Mall in Markham. They have dozens of phone, gadget, computer, etc stores under one roof. At least one of them must have a cable like that.
BTW, another option to consider would be a retractable cable. I see hundreds of them on eBay so they are quite common and should be easy to find. When retracted they're only 2 or 3 inches long so they're very portable. |

Also try Dollarama - they have all sorts of cheap iPhone/USB connection cables.

Not expecting to find it there, but I ended up getting one at the local Source (now owned by Bell) a 10-15 minute walk from where I live. Yes, they're cheaper elsewhere, but a 2 way trip is $5 on TTC, so that evens out. No, I did not get the "insurance".

Glad to hear you found what you needed. As much as people complain about Radio Shack ("the Source") for me they have always been a good go-to when I need an electronic part of some kind. Yes, you'll pay more but that's the cost of convenience.
