I see no reasons why it didn't work... I have an iPod touch and used it one floor above my SMC modem every day. Did you use the wireless channels 1, 6, or 11?

The wifi on this POS is awful. Cuts in and out, weak, etc. I just disabled the wireless and added my own wireless router. Connected both on ports #1 and all is well. I had to connect my wireless router directly to PC to setup wireless settings and security. But then just added it to modem. Cheap Netgear router and I get twice the wifi speed and range on my tablet. And most important it has zero connection issues |

About once a day on average, all of my Wifi devices suddenly cannot connect to the cablemodem. The SSID still appears, but if I try to Join, device reports "Cannot join network". My computer that is directly plugged into the cablemodem via ethernet cable still has functional internet at this time. After I power cycle the cisco cablemodem everything works again...
Until the problem repeats itself the next day. It's annoying having to power cycle the modem almost daily. Anyone know why the cablemodem WiFi suddenly prevents connections? |

Hello fellow Cisco users.
I'm hoping you can guide me here. When I get home from work, my tablet picks up my neighbour's wifi (yes it's open and I've warned him) whose house if further from my garage than mine. So my question is what is the best way to extend the range of this device? Right now it's getting real weak at 30'-40'.

I had this issue as well. I found the culprit to be excessive wifi congestion, meaning too many people in the vicinity have wifi. This fix might work: 1. Login into the modem's firmware via http://192.168.0.1 2. Click the wireless tab 3. Set these are the options Network Mode: Mixed Channel Width: Wide - 40 MHz Channel Standard Channel: (you need to use a program such as inSSIDer to find the least populated channel) Wide Channel: (Again, pick this based on the least populated channel) If this doesn't fix the issue then you would likely need to purchase a router with ddwrt firmware capabilities and set the wireless signal strength to basically pillage your neighbors. |

I just got this router as an upgrade special to stay with Rogers and not go with Bell Aliant FibreOp.
What is the benefits of sticking with your current N wi-fi router and not using the Cisco built-in wi-fi? Why shut down the extra features of this router? I did some speed tests and with my new Extreme Plus package, am getting 25-28mbps down and .9 up. |

Brad, the Cisco, not having an external antennae, doesn't have much for range. I'm getting 35 to 40' at most. Will likely take dlEverything's advice and replace it with a good N router and pillage the area with my wifi signal. Either that or buy a range extender.

I have had good range and no drop outs with the cisco. I found setting the channel to auto and setting to deny mac address settled my setup. If you are using apple products the settings stated above are recommended by apple

You can try sending a PM to Shaw Champ or shawsean and they should be able to connect you to the people that can get it done. It certainly is possible and I would suggest your friend just close that chat and start a new one with a different agent.

What I generally do if they have no idea is ask them to speak with the TSR2.5 people or senior TSRs and either they talk to the senior tech and get it done or they pass me on to them.
The last time I wanted them to set mine to Bridge I called the main support line... sure it took forever for them to answer the phone.. but it got done on the first try |

Is there any tricks to get this thing to send out a more powerful signal?
Anyone try setting an wireless access point with this thing? I'm getting more and more angry by the day with this POS router. Every night my Wi-Fi rating in Windows will cut from a consistent 4 bars to 1 -2 bars with a latency of 400-600ms. I'm going to trying setting up an access point with an old router in the middle of the house with a wireless bridge and see what happens. This thing is beyond terrible. |

I already had an Asus RT-N56U wireless router - excellent gear, great wireless performance all across our three story 80 year old house even though the router is sitting sub-optimally near the basement floor.
We moved to Broadband 50 and I'd asked the installer to be sure it was flashed to "bridge mode" because I wanted to continue to use our Asus router. Apparently he didn't make that request so I spent some time pulling my hair out wondering why it wasn't working correctly; I should have much earlier in the day assumed the request wasn't fulfilled as I suspected all along. On the phone later that day I had a tech rep make it so, and that was that - simple (zero!) configuration and great performance. ![]() Edit: With the combo of gear noted above I get very close to the performance noted above whether I am connected via wireless or wired connection, only marginally better with the wired connection. I used to use a PC based router (running FreeBSD on one of my servers) which also was able to deliver high performance but the tiny Asus delivers better wireless, uses next to no power, generates no sound nor heat worth mentioning. |

Tandem, did you get a chance to compare the Cisco's range vs. your ASUS' range before you bridged it?
