From all the research I have done, the Shaw Direct portion of the new satellite will add 16 transponders, so will be 250Mhz below the bottom of the normal FSS Ku band.
It remains to be seen how exactly Shaw will integrate this newer satellite into the current voltage polarity and tone satellite switching, and possibly remain compatible with legacy receivers. |

IMHO, I don't think they'll bother making the new Sat compatible with the existing legacy receivers. I expect the new Bird will carry new HD signals; and to get them you'll need a 6xx series Box and the new LNBs. If you don't get the hardware you'll be out of luck. ![]() But the side benefit would be existing legacy hardware Customers would remain whole just as they are => with no new hardware.

I had Shaw Direct installed yesterday and received the new LNB. Installer said they've been giving them out for a little more than the last week.

Isn't the new satellite going in at 107.3 degrees, where Anik F1 currently is? If so, why is a new LNB required? Is that because of the X-band frequencies that are going to be used?

The new Triple Satellite Quad XKu LNB is required only if you plan on subscribing to any channels broadcast on the 3rd satellite.
It will be launched in approx 12 months. There will be three satellites in the two existing orbital slots, and only the new Triple XKu LNB will be able to "see" the new 3rd satellite. Also, it is important to note that if the Primary Account holder has the new Triple LNB on their dish, all other secondary locations (the Cottage, brother-in-law, etc...) will need one too. Otherwise the secondary location receivers will NOT be able to watch TV. |

Brother-inlaw = account sharing = illegal, that is why some people will want to buy and XKU lnb...
Legitimate documented cottage systems will not be effected as long as you have a dedicated receiver at that location , otherwise you would need to call to get code changes which would be annoying at best. |

Anyone signed up with the Home-Away-From-Home program ($100 plus tax) will get a new LNB for their legitimate secondary location.
All other Secondary Users will be required to purchase a new Triple LNB which retails for $113 (inc. tax) in the Toronto area. |

Yes, the new satellite (G1) will be co-locagted ad 107.3 with F1R. The satellite (portion that Shaw Direct have contracted) uses a band 250 Mhz below and to the bottom of the traditional FSS Ku band F1R/F2 uses. A new LNBF is required to get that satellite. As I said earlier, it seems that the LO is about 500 Mhz higher than a normal LNBF, to fit within the band pass capabilites of the tuners (which are known to tune 900 to 2100 Mhz or so).

Ok. I have a motorized system that I use currently, with a linear LNB to get other FTA channels, as well as Shaw Direct services that I subscribe to (I really only watch HD, so I normally just tune into 111.1 degrees).
Would I be able to buy an LNBF that does X-band on its own? I haven't found any except some expensive Norsat ones. I'd rather just put one up than a hulking beast provided by Shaw, as I already have other LNB's on my system and I don't want to add to much more due to the motor only being able to handle so much weight. |

The LNBF does not do the X-band. It is X-Ku, which means Extended Ku.
IMHO, you are best served with a dedicated dish for Shaw Direct, and use your motorise dish for FTA only. |

Oh, I see.
Well, I've never had problems with my motorized dish for Shaw. I get good levels as well (97 signal strength, 10.4 db EKB). I like having one dish as it's a clean setup, and with the Multi-Star railmount system, I have 5 different LNB's up there to get various things like the NBC Mux, which requires a special skew. |

Is there any similarities to the Directv Slimline LNB that the MPEG4, B Band receivers use?
