Thumbs down Canucks' Torres to face no suspension for hit on Seabrook

Vancouver Canucks forward Raffi Torres will have no further discipline assessed following his hit on Blackhawks' defenceman Brent Seabrook during Game 3 of their series on Sunday night.

Quote:
There was no scheduled hearing with the league on Monday. The NHL's Hockey Operations department said that the rule did not violate Rule 48, which provides an interpretation that the area behind the net is designated as a "hitting area".
As a hockey fan first, Canucks fan second, and who thinks head shots of any kind should be banned, I hope Torres gets what's comin' for him tomorrow night. He adds nothing to the team in terms of skill or general human intelligence. He didn't learn his lesson, he never will, and if the league won't punish him, Chicago should. If John Scott has only one shift tomorrow, I hope it's to make Torres pay.

I don't know what to think, I agree head shots should be banned but it seems players these days put themselves in these situations because of these rules. One of the first things I learned playing hockey was keep your head up (the other was don't turn your back on the guy if heading towards the boards or against the boards and a player is coming in) and now I see all these younger players with their heads down, looking behind, turning their back on a player when against the boards....it seems these players are being taught how to draw penalties instead of protecting themselves.

The way the rules are now this was a legal hit.
Now was Torres trying to hit his head , we will never know.
In my mind it was a blind side hit , so a 1 or 2 games suspension was in order.

Now if the league bans any kind of hit to the head , they better do the same for fighting
They dont want to get rid of fighting so they will never have a full ban on head shots .

well the violence in the game is costing the league and the sport fans and money. Sooner or later they are gonna have to do something about the fighting, head hits, etc. not just for hockey either, but for football as well.

There are articles by the Global and Mail saying so, when I find them again, I'll post them.

You think Pittsburgh would have the same revenue if Crosby never laced up the skates again? What about opposing teams' ticket sales when the Penguins are in town?

The league can ban head shots while still allowing fighting.

I think Vigneault was out of line by saying it didn't even deserve a penalty. Teams have to be more responsible for the players in their roster. He showed what he truly thought of Torres by barely playing him in the 3rd period because he didn't want any stupid penalties.

I'd like to see fighting banned too, doubt it will happen though.

fact is no one in the USA, save maybe the north, really cares about hockey, why? too violent.

I actually think the opposite. A reason why many people go to hockey, especially in the US, is the fighting and hitting. You can't tell me that hockey is too violent for a country where boxing is historically a popular sport, MMA is one of the fastest growing sports and football is the most popular sport.

The NFL is doing something about headshots.

I agree, the violence in hockey appeals to many in N.America. But those people should stick to watching MMA instead. There's a problem with the sport when the priorities are hit first, puck second. In Torres' case, he could've easily gained possession of the puck without taking Seabrook's head off.

Ah, ever look in the stands when there is a fight going on? They are standing on their feet cheering not running for the exits.

or there are people like me saying break that *stuff* up and play the game, while others will run if their is blood, which is unavoidable even in an accident, but not very nice for your 4 year old girl to see close up is it?

Um, ever see what happens when a goal is scored? It's time to get back to basics, which is putting the goal in the net.

Well being a hockey fan for 40yrs it's tough to change me. I have watched around 400 games a year for atleast 5 years now. I love the big open ice hits, I love fights and I love a tight checking game. I don't need each team scoring 5 goals a game. In fact I would prefer to see plenty of scoring chances with a 2-1 game than see a penalty filled 6-5 game where the ref's want to be the show.
I love 5 on 5 hockey and liked the days where they almost had to kill someone to get a 5 on 3. I want players to pay the price for crossing the blue line and not just able to skate in untouched.

That said, I don't like direct hits to the head but I still want a hard hitting game.
