Default ATV2 Wireless Issues?

Okay -- you've all probably read this complaint before. I did a quick check of the archives and couldn't find a recent post about it so no one bite my head off!

Here goes again!

My scenario:

iMac i7 running iTunes (2nd Floor of House) connected wirelessly to Airport Express on Main Floor.

Basement has ATV2 connected wirelessly to Airport Express (on main floor)

My problem is that the music streams decently but the movies don't stream. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. They usually don't. Spinning wheel of death and I wait forever for it to load.....sometimes it won't load...

Will I get better performance if I connect the ATV2 into a wired connection? I only have an Airport Express so no output ports. Looking into getting the Extreme unit..

Suggestions from the pros out there?

Drum roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are a few things you could look at and try.

One thing is signal strength. Both your Mac and the Apple TV will give you an idea of how well they are receiving the wireless signal. If it is low you may have to move a device to gain better signal. The other thing you can try is configuring the AirPort Express to use a different channel or frequency. Interference from other devices in the house or in the neighbourhood could cause signal degradation.

Another thing you may want to try is to see want difference moving the devices closer together may have. The iMac is easy enough to move into the basement and so is the Express. Try moving them all into the same room and see if you still experience the same problem. If the problem goes away then possibly adding another router to created a WDS will help the situation.

Adding an Extreme to the mix may solve your problem. It's three antenna design tends to work better in difficult situations.

Absolutely.

As noted many many times around here, a wired connection is always superior to wireless

A wired connection will also eliminate the question of whether your problem is software related as opposed to signal related. If your problem persists with a wired connection then you know that the problem is software related.

If I go with the Airport Extreme then my setup would shake up like this:

iMAC [2nd Floor] <-- Wireless

Cable Modem --> Airport Extreme --> Ethernet --> Apple TV

I would still be working with one wireless connection from the iMAC to the Airport Extreme but NOT two like I have right now.

How do I go about changing the Express channel frequency?
